Neil Patrick Harris, "Mad Men", "30 Rock" big hits at this years Emmys

September 20, 2009
[caption id="attachment_1979" align="alignleft" width="199" caption="Neil Patrick Harris"]Neil Patrick Harris[/caption]

The 61th Emmy Awards hosted by Neil Patrick Harris proved to be the best broadcast in recent years. Harris, who also hosted this years Tonys, seemed to bring new life to the usually boring awards show. The producers cleverly tried a new format and grouped the awards into genres this time out. There was also a taped look back at the year, broken into the genre segments reality, comedy, drama, variety and movies and mini series. The band, who are usually invisible in a pit underneath the stage,  was live onstage and in an welcomed twist, the directing team was on stage behind a see through booth, allowing them to be a part of the show as well.

Once again Harris was the perfect choice of host as the kidded Jon Cryer who beat him out for best supporting actor on a comedy for Two And A Half Men. As Jon was backstage in the press room, Neil interrupted him, asking him what it felt like to win and what was going on in his mind as he went on stage to accept his Emmy. "All I kept thinking was screw you Neil Patrick Harris!", Cryer shot back.

Harris performed a great opening number, worked in sing along blog with Castle's Nathan Fillion. The show ran so smoothly, that is only ran 4 minutes long.

30 Rock and Mad Men repeated as winners this year having also won last year for Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series, respectively. Jon Cryer of Two And A Half Men and Kristen Chenowith of Pushing Daisies won for Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock and Toni Colette of The United States Of Tara won for Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series.

Michael Emerson of Lost and Cherry Jones of 24 won for Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Drama Series while Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and Glenn Close of Damages won for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. For a complete list of winners visit: EMMY Winners.

Many fans will be celebrating the show's finale with live blogs, Internet chats, and live Twitter feeds.

Switchfoot host live studio chat with fans via Ustream and Twitter

September 15, 2009
[caption id="attachment_1944" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Switchfoot in concert"]Switchfoot-tour[/caption]

Switchfoot hosted a live studio chat for their fans today. Band members Jon Foreman (vocals, guitar), Tim Foreman (bass guitar, backing vocals), Chad Butler (drums, percussion), Jerome Fontamillas (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), and Drew Shirley (guitar), answered questions posted by their fans via twitter. During the chat, they showed some of their guitars, announced their upcoming tour dates, showed the video for their new release, "Mess Of Me" and announced the pre-sale of their upcoming album, "Hello Hurricane".

In announcing their tour dates, which are being finalized and will be posted on their official website next week, they announced a few of the cities they would be playing on this tour: Anaheim, Austin, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Oklahoma City, Scottsdale, Tucson, and Ventura to name a few. The band also plans to play internationally, heading to Europe, Australia, among others next year in 2010.

Also on this upcoming tour, the band plans to change things up a bit with the stage line up. Bassist Tim will be playing from the other side of the stage. He notes that the stage world might be a little different for him if he sees it from the other side of the stage. The band also plans to play this upcoming album "Hello Hurricane" on tour in its entirety, a trend that is becoming more the norm for performers lately. Motley Crue, The Cult, Judas Priest, and Aerosmith has all experimented with the touring concept this summer. "We always try to write an album in a concept from start to finish. It would be great to play it for fans in the way that we originally conceived it. Songs 1 through 6 and then songs 7 through 12 were meant to read like of book and it would be great for the audience to hear it that way.", says Jon. The band will also play both theirs and fan favorites from their past 6 releases as well.

They them moved onto some fan questions posted on Twitter which Jerome read from his iPhone. The band was

asked if there was a song that means more to them now than when they first wrote it. Their mega hit "Dare You To Move" was the obvious choice for them. Says Tim and later Jon continued, "It's the one song that kind of grew as we  did." It seems the band will always enjoy singing the song. "Unlike many bands who always gripe about having to sing their big hit, we never get tired of playing it. We've played that song more than any song in our entire career. It means a lot to us".

In a funny moment, the guys were asked if they had any pre-concert performance rituals, drummer Chad demonstrated his drumming warm-up ritual that he taps out his riffs on each of his band-mates backs. They're his drum warm-up. They shared that he does that before every performance.

The album, "Hello Hurricane", is available for pre-sale on their official website tomorrow. It features the single "Mess Of Me" which is already getting very good radio and video airplay. The band experimented a lot on the new album more than ever before. They showed a version of "Mess of Me" that they shot in their San Diego studio.

The band plans to host a second chat next month. For more info on Switchfoot, tour dates or to pre-order their album, visit their website: Switchfoot.

September 10, 2009
[caption id="attachment_1889" align="alignleft" width="186" caption="Photo: AP/Matt Sayles"]Photo: AP/Matt Sayles[/caption]

Ellen Degeneres spoke on her talk show about her choice as the fourth judge of the Fox mega hit show American Idol. "Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you," DeGeneres said on her syndicated talk show Thursday. "I sit at home and I watch it, and I don't have that technical ... I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person."

Degeneres replaces Paula Abdul who had a rather public contract negotiation battle wit hthe show's producers which resulted in her leaving the show where she has served as a judge and unofficial mentor to the contestants since 2002.

Although she has no music experience, many fans across the Internet welcome the idea of Degeneres as a judge as her opinion will be just like theirs.

Look for Degeneres to take on her role as judge when she joins show judges Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest for the 9th season of Idol beginning in January.
