AFI Film Festival Highlight: "La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet"

LadanseFamed documentarian, Fredrick Weisman returned to Paris to shoot the documentary feature, "La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet". "La Danse" is one of the documentaries highlighting the 2009 AFI Film Festival.

In the film, Weisman allows us to voyeur into the world of the ballet behind the scenes. We see rehearsals in the studios and on stage, the costume making department, and the administrative offices of the artistic director. He allows the audience us to sit in on meetings with the artistic director as she meets with budgeting committee, her choreographers and her teachers. We get an even more personal view as the artistic director has a heart-to-heart or one-on-one with one of her dancers, who at over 25, is fearful of not being able to perform the demanded jumps and plies that a performance often requires. The director assures the dancer that she would not have to participate in every dance and that reassurance seems to be just what is needed. The realities of putting on a costly production are looked at as well, as life as a dancer is shown as well. There is a company meeting where retirement packages for a dancer in the Paris Opera Ballet is discussed and reminded that a dancer's life ends at 40.

Lovers of all dance genres will love this look at dancing. Shot in France with English subtitles, there are beautiful aerial looks at Paris. Final performances at the end, bring the film full circle.

The Music of 'Twilight Saga: New Moon' discussed at Film and TV Music Conference

twilight-new-moon-soundtrack-album-art-400x400The Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film and TV Music Conference was held at the Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Panels were  devoted to the music of the Twilight Series. The upcoming feature "Twilight Saga: New Moon" and it's soundtrack was discussed. The soundtrack is currently #1 on the Billboard Chart.

In attendance at the first panel were the film's Music Supervisor Alexandra Patsavas and Livia Tortella from Atlantic Records. They shared their premise behind choosing the music for the film. Every song was specifically written for the movie. The two note that this movie feels more male oriented than the last one which seemed to make it easier for the music team to make song and band selections this time around. Bands from around the world, pitched material to the film's director, Chris Weitz,  and Summit Entertainment, before the final song selection was chosen.  The result is a collection of songs that Patsavas feels could all easily go together. "You could easily attend a Lollapalooza-like music concert and see all of these artists on the same bill", Patsavas said.

What also sets this soundtrack apart from others is that every song in the movie is on the soundtrack, which is rare. Many radio stations are already treating the soundtrack as a concept album and are playing it from straight through from beginning to end. The soundtrack features the music of Death Cab For Cutie, Thom Yorke, Anya Marina and more. After having a song on the first soundtrack,  one sought after artist' s work will not be included this time around, the film's star, Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward.  Patasavas notes that he didn't want a second track. He's a private artist and music is his hobby so he declined a chance to put a song on "New Moon". Summit definitely wants to feature his music on future soundtracks should he change his mind.  They will ask him again when selecting music for the next film,  "Eclipse" and  hopes that he reconsiders.

The clever marketing  and cross-promotion campaign that was instrumental in the success of the first Twilight

film, will repeat again. Some of the bands whose music is featured on the soundtrack and cast members from the film will be heading out on tour at Hot Topic locations and various sites across the country. Headlining the tour's opening date will be  Death Cab for Cutie, who has the first single off of "New Moon", "Meet Me On The Equinox.”

    Tour Schedule:

The New Moon tour will kick off  in Los Angeles at the Hollywood & Highland mall, with  performances by Death Cab For Cutie, Band of Skulls, Sea Wolf and Anya Marina, as well as a Q&A session with some of the cast members.

Official dates and locations of the Twilight Saga: New Moon Talent Tour are as follows:

"Twilight: New Moon" opens Friday, November 20. The original movie "Twilight" will be re-released in theaters for one  day only on the 19th, as way for film goers to see both films on the big screen again and to create even more excitement for the new film.
