Kathryn Bigelow wins Director's Guild Award for "The Hurt Locker"

January 31, 2010

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to receive the best director honor for her film, "The Hurt Locker." Bigelow beat out such heavy-weights and repeat nominees Quentin Tarentino with "Inglorious Basterds" and ex-husband James Cameron with "Avatar". She also won out against fellow first time nominees Lee Daniels with "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and Jason Reitman with "Up In The Air."

"The Hurt Locker" tells the story of a U.S. military bomb squad that defuses explosives amid the fighting and insurgents. The film has been celebrated on the awards circuit having received nominations from Critics Choice, Golden Globes and Screen Actors' Guild to name a few.

Traditionally, directors who has received the trophy from their peers at DGA have gone on to receive an Oscar nomination and ultimately the win at the Academy Awards. Bigleow will learn if winning this award will lead her to the Oscar Ceremony as a nominee when the Oscar nominations are announcing on Tuesday, February 2.
The Academy Awards, hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will be broadcast live on Sunday, March 7 on ABC.

The Festival takes place in beautiful Boulder, Colo., Feb. 11-14, and will bring films, filmmakers and international fans together for a four-day celebration of the fine art of filmmaking.

“Blythe Danner's Oscar-worthy performance makes the battling of wits into an art form.”

No Surprise: Oprah Named Favorite TV Personality

January 25, 2010 05:00 AM Eastern Time
Oprah Regains Her Position as America’s Favorite Television Personality

Glenn Beck debuts at number 2, Jay Leno drops to number 3

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One of the joys of watching television is seeing characters and over-sized personalities; in fact, one station even has a whole marketing campaign centered on characters. Each year, new television personalities are added to the list of favorites and others drop off, showing another joy of television watching – it is never the same, year after year.

This year, likely due to her announcement that she will be discontinuing her show in September 2011, Oprah Winfrey is America’s favorite television personality, up from No. 4 last year. Brand new to the list and debuting at number 2 is Fox News’ personality, Glenn Beck, while last year’s number one, Jay Leno drops to number three. One thing to note is that this survey was conducted before the change on NBC, dropping the 10pm Jay Leno show and moving him back to the Tonight Show.

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll® of 2,276 adults surveyed online between December 7 and 14, 2009 by Harris Interactive®.

Six Guys and a Girl

The only female on the rest of the list comes in at a tie for fourth place, talk show host and new American Idol judge, Ellen DeGeneres, down from no. 3 last year. The new and maybe improved Dr. House, or rather Hugh Laurie is also tied for fourth, down from no. 2 last year.

Next on the top ten list are The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart at number 6, Two and a Half Men’s Charlie Sheen (no. 7), NCIS’s Mark Harmon (no. 8) and making his own top ten, David Letterman at number 9. Returning to the list after dropping off last year is Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly at the tenth spot.

On the Fringe

This year, two news personalities, both conservatives are new to the list. One is making a first time appearance (Glenn Beck) and the other is returning after a one year absence (Bill O’Reilly). This means two television personalities have dropped off the list. One is a fake television conservative, and Daily Show alum, Stephen Colbert who was tied for number 9 last year. The other is also a Daily Show alum, but he plays a bumbling Office manager, Steve Carrell, who was number 8 last year.

Talk Soup

There are different number ones for different groups. Men say Jay Leno is their favorite, while for women it is Oprah. Generations also have their favorites. Echo Boomers (those aged 18-32) are about to be disappointed as Conan O’Brien is their favorite, while for both Gen Xers (aged 33-44) and Baby Boomers (aged 45-63) it is Oprah. Another talk show personality is tops for Matures (aged 64 and older) – Glenn Beck.

There are definitely some partisan differences. Glenn Beck is the favorite for both Republicans and for Conservatives, but, interestingly, also for Independents. Oprah Winfrey is number one for Democrats and Moderates, while Jon Stewart is the favorite for Liberals.

While there may be different favorites for different groups, there is one consistent theme. Of the ten on the list, seven of them are talk show personalities. Just one is a sitcom star and two are from dramas.

This Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States December 7 and 14, 2009 among 2,276 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words “margin of error” as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.

Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

These statements conform to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

ABC introduces 'Happy Town' starring Steven Weber

ABC has announced a series of new shows that will debut soon on the network. One of the new shows slated for mid-season replacement, is "Happy Town" starring Steven Weber (Wings, Studio 360) and Sam Neil.

Described by executive producer, Scott Rosenberg, as "Happy Town is Salem's Lot crossed with Twin Peaks", the plot synopsis is:

Haplin, Minnesota, "Happy Town," has enjoyed an uneasy peace for five years, but all that is about to change. Still haunted by a number of unsolved kidnappings, the small town now faces a dark new crime that brings all its unresolved fears to the surface. Has the elusive "Magic Man" - who many believe is responsible for the bizarre abductions -- returned to claim another victim? As Haplin's mysteries are revealed, many of its prominent citizens' motives come under scrutiny as their own secrets and personalities are peeled back one layer at a time.

Haplin is full of colorful characters, including Big Dave Duncan (Abraham Benrubi) and the nefarious Stiviletto brothers, but many in this small town in middle America have skeletons in their closets. Who will step up and help unearth the secrets that have festered under Haplin's cheery exterior? How will its citizens deal with the revelations? And who is the "Magic Man"? Does he really exist, and can he be stopped?

"Happy Town" stars Geoff Stults as Tommy Conroy, Sam Neill as Merritt Grieves, Lauren German as Henley Boone, Steven Weber as John Haplin, Amy Acker as Rachel Conroy, Sarah Gadon as Georgia Bravin, Robert Wisdom as Roger Hobbs, Jay Paulson as Eli "Root Beer" Rogers and Ben Schnetzer as Andrew Haplin.

Recurring stars include Frances Conroy as Peggy Haplin, Abraham Benrubi as Big Dave Duncan, M.C. Gainey as Sheriff Griffin Conroy, Peter Outerbridge as Handsome Dan, Warren Christie as Greggy Stiviletto and Sophia Ewaniuk as Emma Conroy.

The Late Night drama continues as Conan rejects NBC's decison to move "Tonight Show".

January 12, 2010

Earlier this week, NBC announced that it was ending it's 10pm experiment by canceling the "The Jay Leno". The network plans to move Leno's talker to his original Tonight Show time slot of 11:35, opting to push the current "Tonight Show Starring Conan O'Brien." O'Brien and Leno has both joked about the situation on their on-air monolgues but off-camera the funny men aren't laughing. Ending the speculation as to what O'Brien's decision would be, he released a statement today saying he would not agree to NBC's suggestion to move his show to 12:05.

The statement reads:

"People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.
