By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY
If age 39 seems a little young for Matt Damon to receive a lifetime achievement award, don't worry — they came to bury The Bourne Identity star, not to praise him.

Robin Williams, George Clooney, Clint Eastwood, Ben Affleck, and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel transformed the honor from American Cinematheque into more of a roast than an earnest tribute. A lot will have to be bleeped out when it all airs later on ABC (the date hasn't yet been specified.).

Kimmel has a long-running joke-feud with Damon, who has gamely shown up on his program to throw tantrums, spoof the Bourne movies, and sing a duet with Kimmel's then-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman, to boast about their illicit love affair.

The war continued Saturday night as Kimmel opened the presentation in the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. "This is ridiculous, right? He's not even 40!" Kimmel said. "We're giving the salute to someone in his 30s! Next year, let's give it to Vanessa Hudgens."

In addition to the 21-year-old Disney starlet, Kimmel suggested that American Cinematheque — a group dedicated to showcasing classic films — give the prize to Clyde the orangutan from the Clint Eastwood comedy Any Which Way But Loose.

"I happen to know that Clint Eastwood did not get this award," Kimmel said. "Are you telling me Matt Damon is better than Clint Eastwood? Not even close! Even in the movies with the monkey, Clint was better."

Past recipients of the award actually include Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Steve Martin, Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Williams, who got the American Cinematheque award in 1988, was a little more earnest. He won an Academy Award playing the therapist for Damon's troubled genius in Good Will Hunting. "Thank you for that Oscar moment," Williams said, hesitating before adding: "It didn't get me a lot of work after that … but thank you."

Good Will Hunting also earned Damon and Affleck a screenwriting Oscar, though the then-struggling actors had only penned the movie to given themselves some juicy roles to play. Affleck's brother, Casey, who had a small role in the film too, joked that it was more evidence of Damon's megalomania.

Sighing repeatedly, Affleck noted: "This was the movie you co-wrote for yourself, uh … to play a young man who is smarter than everyone, and tougher than everyone … Even though he had a worse childhood than everyone … Who also gets the girl … and who also has highlights in his hair."

Charlize Theron, who co-starred with Damon and Will Smith in 2000'sThe Legend of Bagger Vance, pointed out that it was "the only Will Smith movie that didn't make, like, a gajillion dollars. Later, I was reunited with Will Smith in Hancock — which did great! So … it must've been you, Matt."

Clooney sent a video tribute, saying he was too busy getting a prostate exam to attend. He wore a hospital grown and an uncomfortable smile as he winced and shuddered his way through kind words, while a "doctor" just below camera went through with the check-up.

Some barbs were more pointed. Greg Kinnear, who played Damon's conjoined twin brother in the comedy Stuck on You, which did poorly at the box office, also co-starred with him in the recent Iraq war drama Green Zone, which also flopped. "We seem to have the uncanny ability to make movies about topics that audiences find irresistible," Kinnear said, joking: "We are now in pre-production on a three-and-a-half hour psychological drama about health care."

Eastwood, who directed Damon to a supporting actor nomination in the South African civil rights drama Invictus, and is currently making a drama with him called Hereafter, took the stage and seemed to change the evening to a more reverent tone.

"Matt Damon is one of the finest and most versatile young actors working out there today," Eastwood said gravely, before adding: "The reason I know that is, when he came to my office to talk about Invictus, he said: 'Clint, you know, I'm one of the finest and most versatile young actors … '"

Eastwood also joked that Damon told him: "'I don't understand why Morgan Freeman is going to play Mandela. I should play Mandela!'"

In addition to being mocked by his friends, Damon also seemed fond of mocking himself. The presentation was filled not just with his movie roles, but numerous clips from The Jimmy Kimmel Show, spoofing himself as an uptight diva; and HBO's Entourage, playing himself as an enraged, weepy would-be philanthropist.

The award was finally given to him by lifelong friend Ben Affleck, whose wife, Jennifer Garner, described Damon as "my darling husband's darling husband."

Affleck appeared comically disheveled and distressed at his friend's success. "All right …YEAH! Matt Damon! Lifetime achievement award … (expletive)," Affleck muttered. "As you may have noticed, if you weren't sleeping through the last four hours of clips, I kinda started out at the same time as the guy. So …" he added sarcastically, "this is a special night for me, too."

Damon responded by making Affleck hold the trophy beside him while he read his acceptance speech — firing back at everyone who had just mocked him, with one exception: "I'm not going to (expletive) with Clint Eastwood."

"Ben, my hetero-lifemate," he said. "You're my best friend, and there's nobody in the business I hold in higher regard. I can honestly say that next year, at this time, Ben could be here … presenting this award to someone else."

Damon added: "I hear there's a lot of buzz about Vanessa Hudgens."

Tim Burton's 'Alice In Wonderland' starring Johnny Depp opens tomorrow March 5 in 3-D

Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland"is finally set to open on March 5th. It's been almost a year since Burton previewed the film at Comic-Con in San Diego when bootleg copies of the trailer were put up and pulled down from You Tube in the blink of an eye. The wait is finally over.

The Lewis Carroll classic "Alice In Wonderland" is one of the most recognizable stories in print and one of the most popular to be adapted into film, television. There may not be a need to include this summary, but just in case, the film tells the story of 19 year old Alice returning to the world she first visited as a child. Alice encounters all her childhood friends, including the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, the Red Queen played by Helena Bonham Carter, the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum and the Cheshire Cat.

Burton was ecstatic to put his own stamp on Carroll's work which has coined numerous phrases that are so widely used in conversation in today.

"Alice" marks the 7th film Burton and Depp have worked on together, including "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sweeney Todd", which garnered Depp a third Academy Award nomination, to name a few. Depp has said that he would do anything that Tim asked of him and even would have played Alice if Tim had asked him too.

The film takes a fresh and funky look at the story that when adding 3D makes it even more unique.

"For me, it’s a story about somebody using this kind of imagery and this kind of world to figure out problems in their own life", Burton said of making the film. "It’s about what’s fantasy and reality and dreams and reality, how they are not separate things, that they’re one thing. It’s how we use those things to deal with our issues in life."

"Alice In Wonderland" opens Thursday, March 5.

Mark Harmon and NCIS family discuss cast camraderie and show success at PaleyFest 2010

March 3, 2010

Night three of the PaleyFest 2010 continued with the CBS hit series NCIS. Now in its 7th season, the show is more popular than ever and is currently the highest-rated scripted series on the air.

Seen all-over the world, the drama about fictional special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, is known for its compelling stories The show is also extremely popular for on-screen relationships of the characters and the clever use of flashbacks to lay insight into who these characters are, not only from watching their day to day interactions with each other but also from seeing their past.

Moderated by Entertainment Tonight reporter, Kevin Fraizer, members of the show attended the panel discussion and Q&A, including cast members Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, David McCallum, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo, Brian Dietzen and Rocky Carroll, along with the shows executive producers, Mark Horowitz, Charles Johnson and Gary Glassberg. Noticeably absent was Pauley Perrette who was doing a photo shoot in Paris.

The evening started off with a retro clip of a scene from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. as a nod to cast member David McCallum. McCallum played on the iconic series in the 60s. Audience members were really into the scene as they are truly fans of both shows. McCallum noted that he was so happy to still be working in the business and enjoying what he does after all these years.

The audience was also treated to a special advance screening of the episode entitled, “Mother’s Day,” the night before its broadcast run on CBS. The show is perfect viewing on a large screen and received a great response from the audience.

“Everyone responded to it and laughed in the right places”, said Carroll in commenting on the audience watching the episode later during the panel discussion.

NCIS has its share of die-hard fans and it was very evident. When cast members were asked to name their favorite episodes, many of the audience members were helping then with the episode titles and remembering certain storylines from the show. When de Paulo mentioned her favorite scene in which Ziva is along Gibbs bedside in the coma, an audience member tells her the name.

When asked about the relationships of certain characters, and the possible “Tiva” romance (the couple name for a Tony and Tiva) pairing, Fraiser asks of the two agents would ever get together, de Pablo, who plays Tiva, notes that it’s good to keep the sexual tension going so that if and when it happens, it would be so much better.

Harmon and Weatherly discuss the relationship between Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo, Harmon who plays Gibbs said that he has a tough relationship with Tony because his is grooming the team to be the best and his prepping the next leader of a NCIS unit which would obviously DiNozzo. Weatherly adds the differences between Harmon and Gibbs saying that Harmon is nicer than his on-screen alter-ego, which is good. The then comments that Gibbs isn’t as nice as Harmon, which makes it all the more challenging because they spend just as much time on the show with Gibbs and they do Harmon, to which the audience laughs. De Pablo and Weatherly kept the audience laughing, displaying the banter in that their characters master so well on the show.

When Fraizer asked if McGee would write a second book, an audience member could be overheard correcting the question, noting it would be McGee's third book.

Much to the fans delight, executive producer Charles Johnson revealed that plans were in the works for a NCIS board game. Expected to be available near the end of the year, the game will allow its players to solve cases right along with the NCIS gang. The cast even mentions the NSIC iPhone app that Deitzen notes is really cool and then pulls out his phone to show a few cast members who had yet to see it.

The family aspect of the show’s cast and crew was really evident watching them on stage and they are fans of the show, noting that if they are working late on the night it’s on, they all will watch it as a group during dinner break.

NCIS airs Tuesdays on CBS. Fans of the show can also enjoy NCIS on a special night, Saturday, March 6 for a rebroadcast of “Power Down.” In the episode summary, the team literally finds themselves in the dark when an investigation into the death of a lieutenant is connected to a city-wide blackout.
