Freddy Krueger: An all new 'Nightmare on Elm Street' opens today

April 29, 2010

A brand new version of the classic film opens Friday, April 30, just in time to kick off May.

In the film's summary, Nancy, Kris, Quentin, Jesse and Dean all live on Elm Street. At night, they're all having the same dream--of the same man, wearing a tattered red and green striped sweater, a beaten fedora half-concealing a disfigured face and a gardener's glove with knives for fingers. And they're all hearing the same frightening voice...

One by one, he terrorizes them within the curved walls of their dreams, where the rules are his, and the only way out is to wake up.

This version of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," is a contemporary re-imagining of the seminal horror classic, starring Academy Award® nominee Jackie Earle Haley ("Little Children," "Watchmen") as Freddy Krueger. The film is directed by award-winning music video and commercial director Samuel Bayer (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"), marking his feature film directorial debut.

An ensemble of young actors play the teenagers now taking on Freddy Krueger, led by Rooney Mara ("Urban Legend: Bloody Mary") as Nancy, Kyle Gallner ("The Haunting in Connecticut") as Quentin, Katie Cassidy ("Taken," TV's "Supernatural" & "Melrose Place") as Kris, Thomas Dekker ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") as Jesse, and Kellan Lutz ("Twilight," "The Twilight Saga: New Moon") as Dean.

The movie is in theaters across the country.

All My Children says goodbye to Palmer Cortlandt in a tribute to James Mitchell

This week, All My Children, says goodbye to Palmer Cortlandt, as the show writes the character's death this week. Palmer's portrayer, James Mitchell, passed away in January.

It was bitter sweet for the actors taping the special episode in which Daisy and Nina return upon hearing the news, played by Gillian Spencer and Taylor Miller, respectively. The women return and mourn the iconic character with Opal, played by Jill Larson.

"Gillian, Taylor and I felt like that we were making a show that was not just art imitating life; it was almost art as life," Larson tells Soap Opera Digest.

The episode finds Palmer's loved ones gathered together at The Martin house to remember the good times with him, and the bad. In lieu of a memorial, the show used pieces of Mitchell's real life and flashback footage, as well as unseen footage from Palmer's last appearance on the show.

Mitchell was last seen during the show's 40th Anniversary episodes that aired in January.

Pine Valley citizens were naturally greatly affected by Palmer's death, including Adam, Erica and Kendall, who learns the news from Erica while out of town.

"...Kendall has a scene where she's talking about Palmer and they show a flashback," shares Alicia Minshew who plays Kendall. "I was so, so glad to be part of it because Kendall and Palmer had quite a relationship for a few years, and I absolutely loved James. He was like an uncle to me."

The special tribute episode to Palmer airs, Tuesday April 20.
"All My Children" airs weekdays on ABC and weeknights on SOAPnet.

Conan O'Brien heads toTBS for late night talk show

April 13, 2010

Late night comedy powerhouse, Conan O'Brien is heading to TBS to host a late-night talk show that is expected to debut in November. The Emmy(R)-winning comedian's new program will be followed by George Lopez's "Lopez Tonight," which will in a later time slot.

O'Brien's deal with TBS came together quickly after George Lopez personally called him to ask that he consider joining the network's late-night line-up. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy."

Said O'Brien: "In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly."

O'Brien and Lopez as a late night duo will only add more attention to TBS as a serious competitor in original programming. The cable network already has an impressive body of work and caters to a young, diverse audience that O'Brien already has a huge following in.

The NBC talk show veteran will host an hour-long, yet-to-be-titled show Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. (ET/PT).

"Conan has been the comedic voice for a generation. TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan's show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks.

"For decades, late-night TV has been dominated by broadcast television," Koonin said. "Now, with a young audience and a growing late-night lineup, TBS is set to be the choice of comedy fans for years to come."

O'Brien is well-known from his many years in comedy. A Harvard graduate, O'Brien's resume included writing stints on "The Simpsons" and "Saturday Night Live" before heading back to NBC as host of "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." The show ran for 16 years, ending when O'Brien briefly took over The Tonight Show.

O'Brien is currently touring the United States and Canada with his live show, Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.

Michael Nouri joins 'All My Children'

Erica Kane is getting a new man. ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" and "Damages" star Michael Nouri has been cast of "All My Children." The film, television and stage actor will be playing the role of Caleb McGraw.

"We look forward to working with Mr. Nouri as he uses his vast experience and talent to bring the unique and complex character of Caleb McGraw to life", executive producer, Julie Hanan Carruthers, said in a statement. "It is with great pleasure that we welcome Michael Nouri to the 'All My Children' family."

In story, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) finds herself in a rather precarious position as her airplane crashes on a mountain side, destroying a remote home owned by a recluse mountain man named Caleb McGraw (Michael Nouri). Clearly not happy that Erica's plane destroyed his home, Caleb offers Erica minimal to no help, leaving her in her high heels in the forest to fend for herself. Nouri's first airdate as Caleb will be on Monday, May 24.

Nouri has enjoyed a long career spanning film, television and theatre. Currently he can be seen in the hit drama "Damages," opposite Glenn Close, and in the feature film "The Proposal," starring Sandra Bullock. He has major recurring roles on ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" and "The OC." He may be best known for his role in the breakout film "Flashdance." On stage Nouri starred on Broadway opposite Julie Andrews in "Victor/Victoria."

Aside from acting, Nouri serves as ambassador to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and to the Seeds of Peace charity.

"All My Children" celebrated its 40th anniversary in January of this year with a two-part special episode that included returning fan favorites Kelly Ripa, Mark Conseulous, Eva La Rue, James Mitchell, Taylor Miller, Eden Reigel and Levin Rablin.

"All My Children" airs weekdays on ABC and weeknights on SOAPnet.
