‘House of Lies’: Showtime previews Don Cheadle's, Kristen Bell’s comedy early (video)

December 28, 2011
Showtime has released the premiere episode of its new comedy online. The series, starring Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, is a look into the cut throat, ruthless world of corporate management consulting. The network describes "House of Lies" as a new dark comedy about all the screwed up ways big business is practiced these days. The series, based on the hit tell-all book from best-selling author Martin Kihn' s book. It peels back the bull to reveal a world few know exists and fewer still have experienced. Cheadle plays Marty Kaan, the big-money earner at Galweather & Stearn, along with his hot, young team - The Pod - of big-balling power players – Jeannie (Kristen Bell), Clyde (Ben Schwartz) and Doug (Josh Lawson). Marty and The Pod's work life is all first-class, top-shelf, black Am Ex, the best suites at the nicest hotels. Wild nights on the town servicing the clients are all in a day's work. Marty is the ultimate power player and under his direction, this ruthless, pull-no-punches team is here to stick it to the man by beating the corporate suckers at their own game.

The show contrasts Marty's wild business side with a more regular home life where he's a parent dealing with issues of his relationship his business competitor ex-wife, dealing with his pre-teen son's choice of creative expresssion and not seeing eye-to-eye with his own father (Glynn Turman) on how to raise his son.

Marty is very much like Ari Gold from "Entourage" without the interesting supporting characters.

The first episode was just okay for me, but as a huge fan of Cheadle's and Bell's, I'll have to give the series a second look.

Check out the first episode of the series below. Showtime will do their annual free preview weekend beginning Friday, January 6th.

"House of Lies" is created and executive produced by Matthew Carnahan. Jessika Borsiczky, Stephen Hopkins and Don Cheadle also serve as executive producers.

Talking to James Durbin of American Idol about "Memories of A Beautiful Disaster" (Interview)

December 11, 2011

Santa Cruz CA native, James Durbin, 22, rocked the stage of “American Idol” every week with his signature high-pitched scream and touched the hearts of America throughout the season as he opened up about his Asperger and Tourette Syndrome condition.

He recently released his debut album "Memories of a Beautiful Disaster” on Wind-Up Records. James talks about his new album for an interview with LA Music Examiner, Belinda Thomas. Here are some excerpts below.

Belinda: Let's talk about the new album, “Memories of A Beautiful Disaster.” I love the title? How did you come up with that title?

James: The title is about looking back on the course of my life and memories of my life, it being a thing of beauty now in what once I thought was chaos...through the beauty and the pain. It makes me who I am today and I wouldn't be able to change that.

Belinda: You're on Wind-Up Records, who are known for launching such bands as Creed and Evanescence? How's it been being on Wind-Up so far?

James: It's been great. My whole goal in shopping for a record contract was to find a label that looked at me as more than just a number on their paycheck......Others label that we went to didn't really want to, didn't really seem to care. Their main thought was how we are going to make money off this...With Wind-Up, before I was even signed yet ... two days after I went and met with them, they called me up just to see how I was doing, to see how the tour was going. I took that to mean that they really cared, and they do really care, they still really care. They're all about me growing as an artist.... They really care about you.

Belinda: I've got to ask you, it must have been surreal working with Mick Mars of Motley Crue. What was working with him like?

James: It was great. Mick is such a character and such a real person. Coming in the studio and getting to watch Mick Mars record and getting to watch him play was so cool because he is so unique and has a unique style of playing his guitar, to getting his tone and his tuning, everything how he plays and watching him play. He's such a real person. I still stay in contact with him. He called me up to see how me and my family were doing and to wish us a Happy Thanksgiving. I enjoy talking to the guy. He's great.

Belinda: You worked on a song, “Screaming,” with David Cook, an “American Idol” winner. How did that come about?

James: I was actually on the Idol live tour and I got to New York. I knew that I was doing a co-writing session and thought I was doing it with someone else and I get in the studio and Cook's there. We're hanging out talking for like 40 minutes and then I finally turned to him and said so David what are you doing in New York, what are you doing here in the city. He said well I' m here to write with you. And I was like oh, well we wasted 40 minutes BS-ing about life and about Idol and the Idol tour and everything and immediately we got to writing. The writing process is such a studious process you really need to be focused on what you're doing to write the best material you possibly can, so we got right into it and more and more people kept showing up and we wrote the song. It's one of my favorite songs on the record. It really comes from a very special place of experience and with passion. I was bullied, beat up for a long time, from elementary school to middle school and high school, I was bullied a lot. That's what the song is about. It's a fun one to sing because I get so into it. I'm really screaming at all those people that singled me out as a kid.

James: I know there is a promotional tour happening now, but are there touring planning coming up? What are you looking forward to most with going on tour?

James: We are planning the tour for early next year, getting everything situated now. I just can't wait to get on the road can wait to play for all the people who bought the record. Plus the ones who have not bought it to give them an incentive to go out get it. It is not just a good record on your headphones with your is a fun record... I don't want to cheat my fans out of something...with an over produced record that they are not able to hear the same thing live. I want them to have the best experience.

CBS's Les Moonves weighs in on 'Two and A Half Men' and the "key" 18-49 demo

CBS president Leslie Moonves sat down for a rare one on one interview at the Hollywood Radio & Television Society (HRTS) Luncheon Series. Moonves talked to Variety's Brian Lowry about everything from 60 Minutes, The NBA, what he thinks about networks basing programming decisions solely on the 18-49 demo.

The very vocal president was asked about everything from show cancellations, NBC and Two And A Half Men.

About "Two And A Half Men's" transition from Charlie Sheen starring to Ashton Kutcher joining the cast," Moonves said, "Things happen. One thing you know from being in this business as long as I have is shit happens. There are things you don't want to happen. It was unfortunate... I'm extremely pleased the ratings are up from where they were a year ago... I'm happy Charlie [Sheen] has a show with a good showrunner at a very good studio, Lionsgate. He's going on, we wish him well. I'm more than happy how well Ashton has done, other than his comments about Penn State, with the show and how Chuck [Lorre] has done the show. The numbers are terrific and I'm glad it's a chapter that's closed." Moonves feels that the show could last with its current numbers for many, many years.

When asked about his thoughts CBS being seen as the "older network" and why focusing so much on 18-49 demo, that so many networks base cancelation decisions about your favorite shows on, doesn't always work, Moonves said,

"As I've always said, even when we were in desperate last place, just basing the world on 18-49 is an untrue measure... we don't sell our schedule solely to 18-49. We sell it all sorts of different ways. The average age of the '60 Minutes' viewer is 63 years old. There are no 20 year olds or 30 year olds watching '60 minutes. "I think the baby boomers have gotten bigger, they've gotten older, I think our attitudes is always... a big hit is watched by everybody, even the big 18-49 year olds. 'American Idol' is not only watched by 18-49, it's watched by 80 years old and it's watched by 15 years old, it's watched by everybody. So the idea of programming just for a niche audience by a broadcaster is silly.'

"Two And A Half Men" airs Mondays and "^) Minutes" airs Sundays on CBS.

More than 50 million television viewers will be transported to a fantasy wonderland this Thanksgiving as they view the 85th anniversary of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And joining the fun will be a collaborative floating stage from the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and Sesame Workshop depicting the magic of playing musical instruments this holiday season.

At 32-feet long, 20-feet wide and two stories tall, the “1,2, 3 Sesame Street” float will rock the holidays when the cast and Muppets of Sesame Street perform “Meet Me On Sesame Street.” The stoop of 1-2-3 Sesame Street will be alive with music as Big Bird, Abby Cadabby, Oscar the Grouch and Elmo along with a slew of their friends delight the crowds with their musical abilities.

'Glee': The Purple Piano Project (Review)

September 21, 2011

I didn't pay a lot of attention to "Glee" last season. In fact, I might have missed an episode or two. Some of the episodes didn't have direction and often read like an Elvis Presley movie where there was nothing but filler in between the great songs. I also wasn't a big fan of the theme shows or the stunt casting (although I love Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly and Kristen Chenoweth as April).

This season might be different as reportedly everything I didn't like will be gone this year. The story was strong again and I could actually feel for the characters, all of them, even Rachel [Lea Michele].

First off, the theme and goals of the year for each of the gleeks was clearly defined.

My favorite guy member, Blaine [Darren Criss], officially transferred to West McKinley High and joined the glee club; much to Finn's [Cory Monteith] and Puck's [Mark Salling] chagrin. They let him know in no uncertain terms that they were different from The Wobblers and were a group. Blaine didn't seem to have a problem with it. He and Kurt [Chris Colfer] are my favorite Glee couple and the two seemed more in love then ever.

Rachel and Kurt provided some laughs when they went to a recruiting mixer for a college in New York. Their dreams of attending Julliard were crushed when Emma [Jayma Mays] informed them that the prestigious school didn't have a music program. I found the fact that these kids who live and breathe their future careers didn't know that, especially after visiting New York last year.

The mixer proved to be an eye opener for them, because for the first time, they got to see how tough their competition after school really will be. A chorus of super gleeks that were practically Kurt and Rachel clones performed a show stopping number that left the ambitious pair shaken and humbled. I loved that Rachel realized that not everyone's dreams come true and loved the pep talk that Kurt gave her, which they both needed.

Sue [Jane Lynch] pitted Santana [Naya Rivera] vs. Becky [Lauren Potter] as they became co-captains of The Cheerios, forcing the two enemies to work together. Both Sue and Will [Matthew Morrison] called Santana out about where her loyalties really lyed when she was asked to sabotaged the purple pianos that Will placed all around the school in an effort to recruit new members. The groups spontaineous "hot lunch jam" in the cafeteria as Mercedes [Amber Riley] called it, led to worse than the slushy baths, an outrageous food fight.

Later Santana "allegedly" destroyed a piano per Sue's instruction and was kicked out of group as a result by Will. He was clear that the group needed to present a united front in order to get to Nationals. Santana declared herself "Team Sue" and accepted her banning. Where Santana ends up this season will be interesting.

The adult's goals were clear too, as Will and Emma continued to take further steps in their relationship. The couple is now living together. Will seemed to be having a harder time adjusting to Emma's idiosyncrasies while she seemed to not miss a beat, moving right into another relationship. Will even broke down to Sue about it, making me wonder how long until the honeymoon phase is over. Will seemed lost last year after the divorce and thinking of leaving the school for New York, as did the show. It was good to see him back. A chorus of super gleeks that were practically Kurt and Rachel cloned performed a show stopping number that left them shaken and humbled. Loved that Rachel realized that not everyone's dreams come true and loved the pep talk that Kurt gave her, which they both needed.

Sue vs. Will is always entertaining and this time Ms. Sylvester took it up 10 notches with a bid for public office. Her campaign platform; cutting out funding for the arts in education.

Quinn's [Diana Aragon] defection from both the Cheerios and New Directions was good. The hair, clothing and the "skanks" her hung out with seemd like a cry for attention. It was good to see her friends to reach out to her. First Santana and Brittney [Heather Morris] tried to no success and then Rachel who seemed to be making a dent in Quinn's armor. You could see that she was thinking about it and I loved that she was secretly watching the rehearsal number at theclose of the show.

Love that Mercedes, my favorite girl, had a new man after Chad Overstreet's Sam was let go from the show. Her football playing guy named Marcus [LaMarcus Tinker.] Now if only she could get more story. Maybe she'll get to play Maria in West Side Story in the school's production this year.

Like she said, she feels pretty this year. I agree.

What were the songs? I did like that 15 minutes went by before I even heard the first song. Telling the story was the focus, which I loved.
