'Glee': The Purple Piano Project (Review)

September 21, 2011

I didn't pay a lot of attention to "Glee" last season. In fact, I might have missed an episode or two. Some of the episodes didn't have direction and often read like an Elvis Presley movie where there was nothing but filler in between the great songs. I also wasn't a big fan of the theme shows or the stunt casting (although I love Gwyneth Paltrow as Holly and Kristen Chenoweth as April).

This season might be different as reportedly everything I didn't like will be gone this year. The story was strong again and I could actually feel for the characters, all of them, even Rachel [Lea Michele].

First off, the theme and goals of the year for each of the gleeks was clearly defined.

My favorite guy member, Blaine [Darren Criss], officially transferred to West McKinley High and joined the glee club; much to Finn's [Cory Monteith] and Puck's [Mark Salling] chagrin. They let him know in no uncertain terms that they were different from The Wobblers and were a group. Blaine didn't seem to have a problem with it. He and Kurt [Chris Colfer] are my favorite Glee couple and the two seemed more in love then ever.

Rachel and Kurt provided some laughs when they went to a recruiting mixer for a college in New York. Their dreams of attending Julliard were crushed when Emma [Jayma Mays] informed them that the prestigious school didn't have a music program. I found the fact that these kids who live and breathe their future careers didn't know that, especially after visiting New York last year.

The mixer proved to be an eye opener for them, because for the first time, they got to see how tough their competition after school really will be. A chorus of super gleeks that were practically Kurt and Rachel clones performed a show stopping number that left the ambitious pair shaken and humbled. I loved that Rachel realized that not everyone's dreams come true and loved the pep talk that Kurt gave her, which they both needed.

Sue [Jane Lynch] pitted Santana [Naya Rivera] vs. Becky [Lauren Potter] as they became co-captains of The Cheerios, forcing the two enemies to work together. Both Sue and Will [Matthew Morrison] called Santana out about where her loyalties really lyed when she was asked to sabotaged the purple pianos that Will placed all around the school in an effort to recruit new members. The groups spontaineous "hot lunch jam" in the cafeteria as Mercedes [Amber Riley] called it, led to worse than the slushy baths, an outrageous food fight.

Later Santana "allegedly" destroyed a piano per Sue's instruction and was kicked out of group as a result by Will. He was clear that the group needed to present a united front in order to get to Nationals. Santana declared herself "Team Sue" and accepted her banning. Where Santana ends up this season will be interesting.

The adult's goals were clear too, as Will and Emma continued to take further steps in their relationship. The couple is now living together. Will seemed to be having a harder time adjusting to Emma's idiosyncrasies while she seemed to not miss a beat, moving right into another relationship. Will even broke down to Sue about it, making me wonder how long until the honeymoon phase is over. Will seemed lost last year after the divorce and thinking of leaving the school for New York, as did the show. It was good to see him back. A chorus of super gleeks that were practically Kurt and Rachel cloned performed a show stopping number that left them shaken and humbled. Loved that Rachel realized that not everyone's dreams come true and loved the pep talk that Kurt gave her, which they both needed.

Sue vs. Will is always entertaining and this time Ms. Sylvester took it up 10 notches with a bid for public office. Her campaign platform; cutting out funding for the arts in education.

Quinn's [Diana Aragon] defection from both the Cheerios and New Directions was good. The hair, clothing and the "skanks" her hung out with seemd like a cry for attention. It was good to see her friends to reach out to her. First Santana and Brittney [Heather Morris] tried to no success and then Rachel who seemed to be making a dent in Quinn's armor. You could see that she was thinking about it and I loved that she was secretly watching the rehearsal number at theclose of the show.

Love that Mercedes, my favorite girl, had a new man after Chad Overstreet's Sam was let go from the show. Her football playing guy named Marcus [LaMarcus Tinker.] Now if only she could get more story. Maybe she'll get to play Maria in West Side Story in the school's production this year.

Like she said, she feels pretty this year. I agree.

What were the songs? I did like that 15 minutes went by before I even heard the first song. Telling the story was the focus, which I loved.

All songs available on iTunes:

"It's Not Unusual" -- Blaine

"We Got The Beat" -- Rachel, Santana, Gang

"You Can't Stop The Beat" -- Rachel, Mercedes, Gang

"Anything Goes/Anything You Can Do" -- NYADA Mixer Group

ABC Daytime will dedicate the September 21st episode of the iconic series "All My Children," to original cast member Mary Fickett, who played Ruth Martin who passed away over the weekend.

ABC's Statement Regarding the Passing of "All My Children" Original Cast Member Mary Fickett (Ruth Martin):

We at ABC were very saddened to learn about the passing of one of "All My Children's" original cast members, Mary Fickett, who portrayed beloved nurse Ruth Brent Martin from 1970-1995 and again from 1998-2000. As we honor "All My Children's" 41 years on ABC, we cannot help but recognize and remember Mary's wonderful depiction of Pine Valley's revered Ruth. Ruth's marriage to chief of staff Dr. Joe Martin provided the bedrock upon which the town of Pine Valley was built. Their marriage was always a stabilizing force that represented "home" for many.

In memoriam, the network will dedicate the September 21 episode to Mary, which specifically focuses on the Martins. We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to Mary's family and longtime fans.

Kelly Ripa: on replacing Regis 'It will have to be somebody entirely different'

September 11, 2011

In an interview with Parade.com, Kelly Ripa shared her thoughts about what her next co-host should be like. Her partner in crime for more than ten years, Regis Philbin, will retire from "Live With Regis and Kelly" on November 18th.

“I don’t think anybody can fill his shoes. It will have to be somebody entirely different," She tells Parade. "We’re wide open to all possibilities. They certainly weren’t looking for me when they found me. I just sort of got there one day by accident. I was filling in for somebody who was filling in and it just clicked. It worked for us. And I think that when it clicks and when it works, everybody will know. America will know. That’s just how it happens.”

Ripa and the show have been tight lipped about who's in the running to fill Regis' shoes. Some names being mentioned are Mark Mark Consuelos, Ripa's real life husband, Cameron Mathison of "All My Children" and "Good Morning America," and Anderson Cooper, who launched his own daytime talk show this week.

Heineken brings 'The Date' to theaters nationwide

Heineken USA announced that “The Date,” the second film in the “Open Your World” campaign, will make its cinematic debut in theaters nationwide beginning September 9th.

The television debut for the full-length spot will appear during Sunday Night Football on NBC on September 18, and 60-second and 30-second versions will air nationwide this fall. The 90-second long-form film follows the Heineken legend as he woos his stunning date on an epic journey. The film will be accompanied by an out-of-home campaign promoting “The Date” in the style of blockbuster movie posters. The big and small screen debut follow the success of the campaigns’ online launch, where it aired on YouTube earlier this year.

“Many consumers have formed an emotional tie to the ‘Legends’ featured in ‘The Entrance’ and ‘The Date,’ and we wanted to continue to build this sentiment off-line in a meaningful way,” said Lesya Lysyj, Chief Marketing Officer, Heineken USA. “The ad’s high cinematic quality and character-driven story make the big-screen a natural extension to our marketing plan, and we think its confident, worldly hero will resonate well with an audience who is looking to be inspired and entertained.”

In support of its TV launch, Heineken also formed an exclusive partnership with the IFC Network to show the film on its network. IFC Network will run the full, 90-second version of “The Date” beginning September 28.

'Contagion': now playing in theaters (TRAILER); 'The Dr. Oz Show' to do special episode on the subject

The new movie, Contagion, tells the story of how quickly a disease can be spread internationally. An international traveler reaches into the snack bowl at an airport bar before passing her credit card to a waiter. A business meeting begins with a round of handshakes. A man coughs on a crowded bus.. One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted. Gwyneth Paltrow stars as a woman who returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong. What she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she's dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband, played by Matt Damon, they have no idea why. Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms: hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hemorrhage...and ultimately, death. In Minneapolis, Chicago, London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong, the numbers quickly multiply: one case becomes four, then sixteen, then hundreds, thousands, as the contagion sweeps across all borders, fueled by the countless human interactions that make up the course of an average day. A global pandemic explodes. At the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers mobilize to break the code of a unique biological pathogen as it continues to mutate. Deputy Director Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) tries to allay the growing panic despite his own personal concerns, and must send a brave young doctor (Kate Winslet) into harm's way. At the same time, amid a rising tide of suspicion over a potential vaccine—and who gets it first—Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard) of the World Health Organization works through the network of connections that could lead back to the source of what they're dealing with. As the death toll escalates and people struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones in a society breaking down, one activist blogger (Jude Law) claims the public isn't getting the truth about what's really going on, and sets off an epidemic of paranoia and fear as infectious as the virus itself. Academy Award® winner Steven Soderbergh ("Traffic") directs an all star cast, including, Marianne Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose," "Inception");Matt Damon ("Good Will Hunting," the "Bourne" films); Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do With It," "The Matrix"); Jude Law ("Cold Mountain," "Sherlock Holmes"); Gwyneth Paltrow ("Shakespeare in Love," "Iron Man"); Kate Winslet ("The Reader," "Titanic"), Bryan Cranston (AMC's "Breaking Bad"), Jennifer Ehle ("The King's Speech") and Sanaa Lathan ("Alien Vs. Predator"). Dr. Oz will host a special episode of his Emmy Award Winning to talk about the movie "Contagion" and its real life effects this week on Thursday, September 15th. Academy Awards 2012: Will Eddie Murphy serve as host?

Comedy master Eddie Murphy is reportedly in talks to host the 84th Annual Academy Awards telecast in February of next year. Oscar producer and movie director Bret Ratner wants to suggest Murphy to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this week, according to Deadline.com.

Murphy is said to be interested in hosting. Murphy as a choice is not unusual considering that last years hosts were Oscar nominees Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

Murphy will star in the upcoming movie, "Tower Heist," with Ben Stiller directed by Ratner. The movie is about a group of men who seek revenge after they find out that they're victims of a Ponzi scheme. It's set to be released in November.

Murphy received an Oscar nomination for his role in "Dreamgirls" and known for his roles in the Beverly Hills Cop, Dr. Doolittle and The Nutty Professor movie franchises. He's known for his voice as Donkey in the "Shrek" movie franchise.

The 84th Annual academy Awards will air February on ABC.
