Thorne: a two part drama event this summer on Encore

April 30, 2012

This summer, ENCORE will present the U.S. television premiere of the riveting two-part crime drama event “Thorne: Sleepyhead” on Tuesday, June 12 at 9pm et/pt and “Thorne: Scaredy Cat” on Wednesday, June 13 at 9pm et/pt.

“‘Thorne’ will take viewers along a gripping, suspenseful journey with the complex and quirky Detective Tom Thorne,” said Stephan Shelanski, EVP of Programming for Starz Entertainment. “The series is an edgy and engrossing addition to the collection of favorite genres ENCORE offers viewers.”

“Thorne: Sleepyhead,” part one of the eerie and atmospheric crime drama event, stars acclaimed actor David Morrissey (“The Walking Dead,” Centurion, State of Play) as the compelling Detective Inspector Tom Thorne who possesses a gritty sensibility and an unhinged desire to discover killers. Morrissey is joined by cast members Natascha McElhone (Romeo and Juliet (2013), “Californication”), Aidan Gillen (Dark Knight Rises, “Game of Thrones,” “The Wire”) and Eddie Marsan (Snow White and the Huntsman, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows). In “Thorne: Sleepyhead,” Thorne investigates a series of unusual attacks on young women. The first three victims are found dead, however the fourth victim – Alison Willetts – survived an excruciating attack and is unlucky to be alive.

The two-part event continues with “Thorne: Scaredy Cat.” In this fast-paced, spine-tingling examination of power and submission, Morrissey as Thorne is joined by Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Detective Sergeant Sarah McEvoy, who appears to be a tough, calm and capable cop to her male colleagues, yet is simultaneously battling a serious drug addiction that is progressing. “Thorne: Scaredy Cat,” chronicles the investigation of two female victims found at the same time – killed in the exact same way. Detective Thorne finds himself on the hunt for not one, but two serial killers who seem to be working together, yet killing separately.

Both “Thorne” installments and are adaptations of Mark Billingham’s bestselling novels “Sleepyhead” (2001) and “Scaredy Cat” (2002). “Thorne” was produced by Jolyon Symonds, written by Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble. “Thorne: Sleepyhead” is directed by Stephen Hopkins (“House of Lies,” “24”) and “Thorne: Scaredy Cat” is directed Benjamin Ross (“Poppy Shakespeare,” “RKO 281”). The Voice: chatting with the Final Four's Tony Lucca

April 24, 2012
Tony Lucca is one of the final two from Team Adam on the TV show "The Voice." The Top 8 contestants performed this week in the semi finals on Monday night. Lucca performed The Heavy’s “How Do You Like Me Now.” On Tuesday night show, one person from each team will be eliminated and the final four will compete in the show finale next week.

I spoke with Tony in person recently about his participation on the show and working with his coach Adam Levine. Here is what he had to say.

Phyllis: How was it finding out about the instant elimination? Did you know about that ahead of time or was it a surprise for you guys?

Tony: It was a surprise. It’s funny because this show is really sort of unlike so many other reality shows, it’s kind of is a real thing. For the most part, what you see is what you get. That was the first time I felt like I was in a Mark Burnett show. I am just surprised it didn’t happen on camera so they could get a reaction like “Oh God - you have 10 minutes to get to your room."

Phyllis: That would be weird or like the Apprentice where you have go downstairs to get in a cab or go to a confessional thing.

Tony: I was surprised but not surprised. They can do this. And for many reasons it is good thing for them to do. No one wants to go home or any sooner than they have to. But it definitely made a lot of sense I think. That was Adam’s point. It upped the ante on the performances. From what I gather there is some buzz out there on the Internet, there are some fans who weren’t too fond of it.

Phyllis: They thought it was going to be their complete choice. That always happens I think.

Tony: It is was it is. I am grateful. I am cool with it.

Phyllis: Congratulations on making it this far. Everybody seems to have their own unique style already developed. How are you working with Adam to do that? How are you just working it out?

It’s funny, it seems like there has been a trend with everybody these latter stages of the contest where coaches are trying to encourage their singers to get quote unquote “out of their comfort zones”. Truth be told I haven’t been in my comfort zone since the blind audition.

Phyllis: You are hiding it very well then...

Tony: I haven’t sung anything terribly out my capacity. I know a lot of my fans are dying to see something that they know, that their familiar with. Now that we are this far along, Adam is ready to kind of unleash that. So instead of stepping out of my comfort zone I do something and step back in and hopefully make some noise.

Phyllis: He [Adam Levine] is really good performer himself. What do you think you have learned the most from him about performing in front of live audience even though you have had plenty of experience with that?

Tony: I don’t know that what I have learned from him is performance related as much as artist and career related. He said something really brilliant one day. It’s like when Yoda talks. You know what I am telling you but you just need to hear it. He said “Careers and life is a series of choices, a series of moments. You don’t remember days, you remember moments, you don’t remember chapters you remember the moments that warranted a chapter.”

When you look at any given opportunity at any given time, the opportunity that is made available to you, the moment that is yours and yours alone. How to make the absolute most of that moment? You have to make the absolute most of that moment. It’s been fun been digging into that.

Phyllis: What do you want to say to the fans, or family again, that has been keeping you into the competition for so long?

Tony: I have said it couple of times now, but getting voted through is like nothing else. Knowing that you have this wave of support, just pushing you forward. There is nothing like it - really. I have some of the greatest fans and friends and family in the world and they are so supportive and never pass up an opportunity to express how supportive they are. I try not to ever pass up an opportunity to thank them. This is as a big of an opportunity as I have ever had and I think they get that so they haven’t left me hanging yet.

Phyllis: I am really happy for you because this is a great show to go and learn from and just grow as an artist. Congratulations. Thank you for talking to me.

How do you feel about having gotten close to your fellow competitors and then having to see one of you go home?

Jamar: "I don't really like that element of [someone] having to go home. I don't

think of say Juliet as my competition. What I mean by that is my own competition. If I go out there and have a good time and have the best gig of my life and it doesn't really matter though if I go home or not. I'm going out there with my head held high....How can I ask for anything else.

Juliet: Here's a perfect example. Mathia, Jamar and I are so different. It's like nobody better than the other person. We're all totally different. We never say, 'I'm competition against you.'

What's great about the show, and you three guys in particular is that you can really see your individual styles already. How do you work with the judges to develop that? What's the collaboration like?

Mathai: For Adam. He loves what I can do naturally. He always says that my voice is so unsteady that you never know. It changes all the time. Like I'll practice it but its different every time. It'll never be the same. He wanted to rain that in and work upon I already and not try to change me, which I liked.

Jamar: I came in with a pretty firm sense of self and I feel like my coach, Cee Lo, is the best coach. He doesn't try to change anything. He's like 'I see what you are trying to do and I want to just amplify it.'

Juliet: He [Cee Lo] takes your best quality and he wants to flourish it.

Anything you want to say to the fans that have kept you in the competition for this long?

Mathai: Oh my gosh. Thank you. Just to know that people are actively supporting us, texting and calling it, whatever...even the fans on Twitter. Thank you for your support. For me especially, I decided that I wanted to do all this stuff. When they support me that kind of make me believe in myself more.

Juliet: I get emotional about it. Last week after I performed, I had fans send me

videos that they put together that are like of all of them with signs and saying they believe in me.. It drove me to tears. Honest to God, it just means everything to me.

Jamar: I just want to say, and I'm very adamant about this, I do not like the word "fan" because then I feel like people idolize you. I just want people to know if they work to live out their own passions and dreams, then they wouldn't have to live vicariously through other people. I feel like there's nothing more remarkable about me than the next person. I have family, not fans, and we are all going on this journey together. So I think of the fans as family. I represent a second chance.

Once Upon A Time's Ginnifer Goodwin talks Snow White at TCM Festival 2012

April 16, 2012

In what most are calling pure serendipity, the star of ABC's newest hit show, "Once Upon A Time," Ginnifer Goodwin, is the hugest fan of Snow White. Now she plays her on the hits series.

On the show she's playing her all-time favorite fictional character, Snow White. The actress was one of many fans who met at Grauman's Chinese Theater, for TCM Festival's Restoration screening of Walt Disney's "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs."

Movie Critic Leonard Maltin hosted a mini Q & A with Ginnifer before the movie. She said that Snow White is her all time favorite movie and character. Snow White has been a part of her history for so as long as she could remember, in fact she doesn't remember exactly when she first began following Snow White.

"I don't," the actress said when asked how old she was when Snow White first entered her life. "My sister Melissa is actually an animator because Disney feature films... her passion for them is what got me hooked. Our mother raised us on these films. I was into this one for many reasons...she's a brunette and I could relate to that. As I grew older and learned a lot more about Walt Disney and what he did for entertainment and I truly think of him as the Steve Jobs of storytelling. I really fell in love with the movie on a whole new level as an adult."

Being on "Once Upon A Time" gives the actress a chance to play her dream role. "I got a phone call and I was told that there was this script by [creators and executive producers] Adam Horowitz and Ed Katsis, who I was huge fans of," Ginnifer shares on how she got the role of Snow White/Mary Margaret. "To play two roles on a television series and one of those roles was Snow White. I said 'I'll take it' and my rep said 'you need to read the script first,' and I said 'no really I'll take it and I did read the script but I took it."

The actress sees the movie in its full glory every chance she gets. "I go to the El Capitan every time it plays there," she says. "...and then D23 has that relationship with the Arclight so yes, I've gone to see it many times. [Seeing it on the big screen] it's the way it's meant to be seen."

How does she see Snow White, who is often described as truly pure and innocent?

"I see her as compassionate and ... a completely innocent incarnation, but when creating the series we wanted to explore some darker sides and sort of exploit some flaws. We felt that that was what would make the character more relate-able, which was very important to us; and really were all very flawed, none of us can really be Snow White."

As shown in the series, Snow's darker side is explored on the show. It was something that Ginnifer and the producers worked hard to make sure it was shown through.

"I think the idea was what if Snow White really was a very real human and over time the story that Walt Disney was telling was based on this woman who thorough a game of telephone over time the story morphed itself into a very pure thing. We made it a little more modern, a little darker in some ways."

"This is a story about vanity," Ginnifer continues. "It's not just the evil queen's vanity. It's Snow White's vanity too because she can't resist the curse that lies ahead. She can't resist the beautiful comb in the Grimms version; she can't resist the beautiful apple in this one and I really liked the idea that we forged, that fantasy.

"I think its all of it together, the fact that the comedy really is funny and the tragedy really is heartbreaking," Ginnifer says when talking about her favorite scene from the movie. "My favorite scene though, I think is the scene in which she's singing in the well and the Prince shows up and she's seen running off really terrified. I think that probably the one I like the most."

"Once Upon A Time:" airs Sundays on ABC.
