NBC launches new reality competition show 'The Winner Is'

May 29, 2012
As NBC as cancelled their singing competition show, "The Sing-Off," it's quickly found another to take its place. The network has ordered  “The Winner Is,” a new vocal game show. This one will have contestants of all ages and of categories from soloists and groups that include adults, kids, teens, seniors, families and professionals.

A celebrity judge will lead a special voting panel to decide who advances on the show and will ultimately win a $1 million cash prize.

From the same production company as the network's smash hit, "The Voice," the new show will offer a unique twist, a chance for the contestants to negotiate a deal with their opponent. Before hearing their fate the contestants can choose to step out of the competition in exchange for a predetermined cash prize or continue on in the game.

“We are thrilled to be working with John de Mol, the creator and one of the producers of ‘The Voice,’ on this original singing game show that will feature a broad range of talent, dueling performers and the surprise of in-the-moment negotiations and decisions,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC.
. “Talented singers and the show’s surprising competitive twist, with the possibility of negotiating a deal to step out of the game, will have viewers engaged and entertained.”

In the finale, eight singers will duel and negotiate. They continue to compete until just two amazing singing contestants remain. Then the two finalists must make a crucial decision. After their performance, they each get the chance to walk away with $100,000 -- or they can risk losing that huge amount of cash by awaiting the jury vote and the votes from the viewers for the chance to win the $1 million prize.

Fall TV Preview: The CW's 'Emily Owens, M.D.'

May 23, 2012
The CW has released preview clips of their new fall shows.
Emily Owens, M.D.  is a new medical drama, ala "Grey's Anatomy" headed by Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer.
The series stars Mamie Gummer, Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Aja Naomi King, Kelly McCreary and Necar Zadegan.
From The CW, at long last, Emily Owens feels like she is an actual grown-up. She can finally put her high school days as the geeky-girl-with-flop-sweats behind her; she's graduated from medical school and is now a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she'll have the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Beckett - and where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Rider is also an intern. So why does everyone keep warning her that the hospital is just like high school?

Connie Britton returns to TV in ABC's Nashville

May 20, 2012
From ABC this fall comes, "Nashville" a new soap opera about the music business. Rayna James (Connie Britton) is a country legend who's had a career any singer would envy, though lately her popularity is starting to wane. Fans still line up to get her autograph, but she's not packing the arenas like she used to. Rayna's record label thinks a concert tour, opening for up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), the young and sexy future of country music, is just what Rayna needs. But scheming Juliette can't wait to steal Rayna's spotlight. Sharing a stage with that disrespectful, untalented, little vixen is the last thing Rayna wants to do, which sets up a power struggle for popularity. Could the undiscovered songwriting talent of Scarlett O'Connor (Clare Bowen) be the key to helping Rayna resurrect her career?

Complicating matters, Rayna's wealthy but estranged father, Lamar Hampton (Powers Boothe), is a powerful force in business, Tennessee politics, and the lives of his two grown daughters. His drive for power results in a scheme to back Rayna's handsome husband, Teddy, in a run for Mayor of Nashville, against Rayna's wishes.

"Nashville" stars Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights," "American Horror Story") as Rayna, Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes") as Juliette, Powers Boothe ("MacGruber," "24") as Lamar, Charles Esten ("Enlightened," "Big Love") as Deacon, Eric Close ("Chaos," "Without a Trace") as Teddy, Clare Bowen as Scarlett, Jonathan Jackson ("General Hospital") as Avery, Sam Palladio as Gunnar and Robert Wisdom as Coleman.

Fall TV Preview: CBS offers 'Vegas' starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis

CBS introduced their new fall TV schedule this week at their upfront presentation. One of the shows that will be looking for an audience this fall

Show's synopsis. Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis star in VEGAS, a drama inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Las Vegas in the 1960s, a gambling and entertainment mecca emerging from the tumbleweeds. Ralph Lamb (Quaid) wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption which are intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb’s command as a military police officer during World War II, the Mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker – and so begins Lamb’s clash with Vincent Savino (Chiklis), a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own. Assisting Lamb in keeping law and order are his two deputies: his diplomatic, even-keeled brother Jack (Jason O’Mara) and his charming but impulsive son, Dixon (Taylor Handley). Ambitious Assistant District Attorney Katherine O’Connell (Carrie-Anne Moss), who grew up on the ranch next to the Lambs, also lends a hand in preserving justice. Kirk Douglas and Liam McIntrye celebrate 'Spartacus' then and now

In a salute to Kirk Douglas, who first brought Spartacus to life in 1960, Liam McIntyre, of the STARZ Original Series “Spartacus: Vengeance” and its creator and producer Steven S. DeKnight will join the iconic star at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Goldenson Theater on Thursday, May 31st to discuss the cultural impact of “Spartacus” then and now.
The evening will celebrate the publication of his 10th book, "I Am Spartacus! Making a Film, Breaking the Blacklist" which will be available as an eBook and in a paperback edition on June 12th from Open Road Media. (openroadmedia.com/kirkdouglas for full details).
"I am happy that Spartacus continues to live in the Starz series, but why didn't they ask me to play him?" Kirk Douglas says. "I made a film about freedom at a time when freedom was in jeopardy and a blacklist had been in effect in Hollywood for more than a decade. There are parallels in today's political climate, which is why a hero like Spartacus still resonates, I believe. Also, it helps to look good in a loincloth!"
The overarching themes of “Spartacus” are certainly familiar to those who watch the Starz original series, but Steven S. DeKnight has created an entirely new vision, and McIntyre a new interpretation in bringing the legendary warrior to life. Based in both historical fact, as well as fiction, DeKnight and McIntyre will speak about the process and pressure of bringing an iconic character to the screen, the advantage of being able to tell that story on premium television, and the acclaimed production elements that give the show a distinctive look.

“Spartacus has a legacy like few other men,” notes McIntyre. “He has inspired millions of people, and
entire social movements. It is my immeasurable honor to discuss such an iconic character with Mr. Douglas and Steven S. DeKnight, who have both breathed new life into this legend in exciting and ground breaking ways."

"I'm unbelievably humbled,” says DeKnight, “not only to have the opportunity to sit down with a Hollywood legend that has inspired me and countless others, but also to discuss how the story of Spartacus has resonated for thousands of years throughout the world."
“Spartacus” as damned by the Legion of Decency and members of the press, particularly influential columnist Hedda Hopper, called for a boycott because Douglas had given screen credit to blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, who had written many award-winning films including Roman Holiday under pseudonyms. The public came anyway, including President John F. Kennedy who went to see it on February 21, 1961 at the Warner Theater in Washington and declared it a "fine film."

“Spartacus: Vengeance” recently completed a record-breaking year on STARZ and features McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Dustin Clare and Lucy Lawless. Previous seasons, “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”, and prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” have been airing in more than 150 countries.
