Comic Con 2012: Tim Burton talks making 'Frankenweenie'

August 26, 2012
Tim Burton's latest animated movie,Frankenweenie, tells the story of a boy named Victor who raises his beloved dog Sparky from the dead in a homemade attic laboratory and in doing so unleashes mayhem on his small New Holland town.

The movie is set to premiere at the London Film Fest accompanied by a free "Art of Frankenweenie" exhibition from Oct. 17-21, offering a glimpse into the stop-motion process, including Burton's original sketches, props, sets and puppets from the movie.
"Frankenweenie" takes Burton backs to his stop motion animation roots. What's new to the mix is making the movie in 3D.
"It was a chance to do something new, to do something that I'd never done before," he said when Animation Examiner asked the question at a press conference last month.
"I recall back to when I was doing Batman, and how worried they all were that it was too dark," Burton said. "Now, it looks like a light-hearted romp. It’s Batman on Ice, you know? It’s interesting because it was such a struggle to get that, at the time."It's been twenty years since Burton's Batman hit the screen. How does the director feel about superhero movies today?
Check out the full press conference in the video on this page.
"Frankenweenie" heads to theaters on October 5th.

This one-hour, 11-part reality show, is a spin-off of mun2’s most popular and highest-rated original reality series, “I Love Jenni,” following the life of Chiquis Rivera. In “Chiquis ‘n Control” viewers will follow Chiquis as she moves out of the Rivera home for the first time and strikes out on her own.

“I’m stepping out on my own and it’s not always easy,” Chiquis said. “Building a new business is a challenge – from permits to hiring stylists to building a client base. It’s a process and I have been learning along the way. I know that traditionally most single Latinas don’t leave home until marriage, however, I have a strong, independent role model in my mother and this was something I wanted to do. It’s been hard. While I love to be by myself, to live on my own, I miss being with my family at times. However, Faith is what leads me and I’m not going to be scared of anything or anyone - from business to just discovering myself.”

Chiquis will be forced to balance her responsibilities to her family, her social/dating life, with being the boss of her first business venture. In each episode, viewers will experience both the drama inside the salon as well as in Chiquis’ home and personal life.

Jenni appears in the episodes to give Chiquis advice about starting out on her own. Chiquis just wants to make her mother proud.
The closet in her apartment that she converted from her bedroom is worth watching the first episode alone. "Chiquis 'n Control" airs Saturday afternoons on Mun 2.

TCM recruits Regis Philbin as Guest Programmer as he picks four favorite fillms

Regis Philbin's name has been in the news a lot lately as Michael Strathan is said to be his replacement as co-host with Kelly Ripa, will be officially announced on September 4th.

On that very same evening, the television living legend will serve as guest programmer on TCM.   Philbin will offer four of his favorite films when he joins TCM host Robert Osborne in presenting the comedy "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" (1948), the Cole Porter musical "High Society "(1956), the Rocky Graziano boxing biography "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956) and George Stevens' rousing action-adventure "Gunga Din" (1939).

The following is the complete schedule for TCM's Sept. 4 Guest Programmer lineup, featuring Regis Philbin:

8 p.m. (ET) – Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) – Philbin finds much to emulate in Cary Grant, citing "his style, his charm, his grace." Grant stars with Myrna Loy in this delightful domestic comedy about a couple whose new home-building project is fraught with complications. Melvyn Douglas co-stars.

10 p.m. (ET) – High Society (1956) – Another major influence on Philbin has been Bing Crosby, who stars in this musical-comedy version of The Philadelphia Story. Grace Kelly, in her final film, stars as a socialite about to get married to her new beau, played by John Lund. Everything goes nuts, however, when her ex-husband (Crosby) arrives on the scene with a pair of reporters played by Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm.

Midnight (ET) – Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) – Philbin admires both Paul Newman and the boxer he plays in this drama, Rocky Graziano. This top-notch biography follows Graziano as he goes from the New York streets to the boxing ring. Pier Angeli, Everett Sloane, Eileen Heckart and Sal Mineo co-star under the direction of Robert Wise. Ernest Lehman's script and Joseph Ruttenberg's cinematography both won Oscars®.

2 a.m. (ET) – Gunga Din (1939) – George Stevens' lively adventure expands on Rudyard Kipling's famous poem with a story about three fortune-hunting British soldiers who face off against a deadly cult in India. Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. star as the soldiers, with Sam Jaffe as the title character, who plays a crucial role in the film's rip-roaring climax. Joan Fontaine also stars.

'Jimmy Kimmel Live': moves to 11:35 opposite Jay and Dave

ABC had finally done it. After years on the air, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" will move to 11:35, putting it in direct competition with late night kings "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Show with David Letterman." "Nightline" will move into primetime as a result.

The move will take place beginning Tuesday, January 8th.  The moves are timed to take advantage of the built-in promotional platforms provided by ABC's "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest" and ESPN's Bowl Championship Series, which culminates with the National Championship Game on Monday, January 7.

"Given the passionate fan base 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' has built over the past decade and the show's ratings and creative momentum this season, the time is right to make this move,"  Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group said in a statement. "There is the potential for far greater upside over the long term with this shift, given increased advertiser demand for competitive entertainment programming in the time slot."

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" has been on the air for 10 years and is known for many popular segments including his annual post-Oscars show, and his running sketch with actor Matt Damon.
Kimmel will host the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 23rd on ABC.

In the bleak and ominous future of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, it’s been a decade since Bruce Wayne hung up his cape, following most of the other superheroes who had been forced into retirement. Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne pacifies his frustration with racecars and liquor – but the Bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.

The return of Harvey Dent as Two-Face finally prompts Wayne to once again don the Dark Knight’s cowl, and his dramatic capture of the villain returns him to crime-fighting – simultaneously making him the target of law enforcement and the new hope for a desolate Gotham City. Particularly inspired is a teenage girl named Carrie, who adopts the persona of Robin and ultimately saves Batman from a brutal attack by the Mutant leader. Interview: 'General Hospital's' Jason Thompson and Steve Burton

August 7, 2012
(L-R): Laura Wright, Jason Thompson, Jane Elliot, Tony Geary, Frank Valentini, Maurice Bernard, Nancy Lee Grahn, Steve Burton, Kelly Monaco and Michael Easton (ABC)
(Originally published at Examiner.com on August 7, 2012) -- The cast of “General Hospital” met the press during ABC’s recent TCA Press Tour to discuss the upcoming 50th anniversary and the changes to ABC’s Daytime lineup.

After the panel, Daytime TV Examiner talked to the show’s Jason Thompson (Dr. Patrick Drake) and Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The two shared their thoughts on everything from fan support to how the network plans to support the show.
I even got to see Steve Burton in hero mode, as he rescued another damsel in distress.(Me….Steve rescued me as I clumsily got my foot tangled up in microphone and cable wires. "I save the day, again," he jokes, once I was free. "That and good hair gets you everywhere.")

Check out the interiew below:
Phyllis: It must be great to have Kimberly (McCullough, Robin) back?
Jason Thompson: Kimberly coming back...it's great for her to come back if only for a couple days. I don't know how long.
Phyllis: You had a great response at the General Hospital Fan Club Weekend last week.
Jason Thompson: We did actually. I was talking to Bradford (Anderson, Spinelli) before I came here. I had a really good time. It was one of the better ones that I've been to. It was fun.
Steve Burton: The one thing that wasn't really answered was virally and social media is great but the one thing our fans like is getting that to send time with us. I think that's one of the biggest problems with daytime audiences is we don't go out enough and build on the grass roots. It's not like we did twenty years ago when I first got on the show. I was on the road every weekend at fan events, taking pictures…
Jason Thompson: Years ago we used to do a bunch of stuff.
Phyllis: It's great you guys are trying to keep that going.
Steve Burton: Yeah but it's hard. They got rid of Super Soap Weekend where we would go for the fans. We'd know half the people. We would have fun, we were kind of a part of their family, they were a part of ours. We had a good time. We appreciated them watching. But that's the main thing that we're missing.
Jason Thompson: I've heard from a lot of people in the past couple years that it was one of those meetings that was a reason people came back to "General Hospital" or why they started watching in the first place. It was because we were personable, we hung out. They could tell we were passionate about the show. Then once you get in there and start to get to know these people, they keep watching, so it's tough. We're just not there enough, as much as we used to be.
Phyllis: How do you feel the promotion department is helping to promote the show? Are they doing anything differently than they have in the past?
Jason Thompson: I think it’s budget, it comes down to money. I don’t if that's going to change, if they'll look at other ways...
Steve Burton: I think one thing is they are trying to promote us now. For a while I think they were just like oh we'll get our national promotion with Soap Opera Digest and others.. Well that's gone now and now you have to pay more attention, really think. How can I promote this and not lose an iconic brand. How can you let GH go? Even the other ones, it's a shame that happened and that should never have happened. We've been very vocal about those two shows ["All My Children" and "One Life To Live," which were canceled last year] should never have been canceled. For "General Hospital" to be on the cutting board is just absolutely ridiculous.
Jason Thompson: People watch in different ways though too. I don't know if they've been able to factor in all of that. It's not just people sitting in front of the TV live anymore. Even the way they count this kind of stuff. Half the time people are watching and it's not being counted. There are people that sit down for three-four hours on a Sunday afternoon and watch the whole week .
Phyllis: How do you get feedback about your character and your storylines? Do you use Twitter?
Jason Thompson: I'm on Twitter. Personally this is just me, I try not to pay too much attention. I love the fact that our fans, they support us but when it comes down to making choices as my character, I try to leave that up to me, the people that are writing it and the other actor, actress in my story line. Everybody's got a different point of view. The only way that I can be sure of this character is to play what I think he will do. When it comes to that, it's a fine line between being too open with everybody else, It's great to have feedback but the time between action and cut and those moments between, I'm building the character. It's really up to me how I portray this guy. You have to kind of watch, they're very involved in a great way, but I have to be true to how he would play these types of story lines and everything. It's a little bit of a fine line.
Phyllis: Time flies. I can’t believe you’ve been on the show seven years already….
Jason Thompson: It’s a life that I look forward to. Interesting thing. I really want to see what happens with this guy, with his family, will he find Robin? Now he's just raising his daughter in the meantime. You look at Kimberly, she was raised on the show. The Robin character is such an iconic character, let alone “General Hospital.” I feel a responsibility to try and build that up and continue it. It me that's what it really comes down to. It’s a curious thing that we do . Television as a whole, ABC and GH's 50th is a very serious thing. We take it seriously in a great way, we still have a good time. We show up to work, it's important what we do. I think that's been the energy behind the scenes. People love what they are doing. That's the energy.
"General Hospital" airs weekdays on ABC.
