The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade to honor Dr. Robert K. Ross

October 28, 2012
The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade will honor Dr. Robert K. Ross at its annual Pioneer of African American Achievement Awards Dinner on Nov. 2, 2012.

Ross is being recognized with the distinguished Bremond-Bakewell Award for his efforts to create healthy communities locally, statewide, as well as throughout the country. Since 2000, Dr. Ross has headed The California Endowment and was previously the director of the Health and Human Services Agency for the County of San Diego, commissioner of Public Health for the City of Philadelphia.

The theme for the 2012 awards dinner is Ways of Giving, and this exciting evening will celebrate the facets of philanthropy, and how each of us has the power to change the world by giving and serving within our own communities.

“I am very excited about honoring Dr. Ross,” said Charisse Bremond-Weaver, president and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade. “He is a man who makes giving and serving a priority.”

With a background as a clinician, in recent years he has championed such causes as providing health coverage for children, strengthening community health centers, and improving the pipeline for bringing racial and ethnic diversity into the health professions.

“At The California Endowment, our giving is a partnership between the foundation and the community,” said Dr. Ross. “We know that just giving money will not necessarily result in change. It’s the community itself that makes the change. Our funding is just one of the vehicles that help communities get there.”

The evening’s master of ceremonies will be local KTLA TV co-anchor Chris Schauble and 94.7 Wave radio personality Pat Prescott. Said Schauble: “For many years the Brotherhood Crusade has served to uplift the greater Los Angeles community, and once again it's my honor to serve this remarkable organization. I keep this night circled on my calendar because I consider it so special!” And about his co-host, he added: “If I’m working with Pat, I know it’s going to be an amazing night.”

Motown recording artist KEM will perform at the event. The singer's latest album, What Christmas Means, was released this month and this year, KEM made his acting debut in the film Sparkle. A survivor of drug abuse and homelessness, he gives back through his foundation, Mack & Third, Inc., a non-profit corporation that benefits Detroit’s homeless community.

'Flipping The White House': new special airs on Discovery Channel

October 24, 2012
(Photo: Peter Souza Credit: The White House)
In the wake of an election year, Discovery Channel will air a special about what happened behind the scenes at The White House when a U.S. President is sworn into office. Called "Flipping The White House," the special focuses on a hand-picked and highly trained team who is tasked with transitioning the old administration out as the new administration moves in - all in less than six hours.

The outgoing president exits the home on inauguration day, and the incoming president enters the home complete with pictures on the walls, books on the shelves, and socks in the drawers just a few hours later. Discovery Channel takes viewers behind the scenes of past "flips" in the special set to air on Sunday, October 28th at 10PM ET/PT.

This new one-hour special features interviews with former key White House staffers, including former President Regan Chief-of-Staff James Baker, former President George W. Bush Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief-of-Staff Karl Rove, former President Clinton Chief-of-Staff Mack McLarty, former President George W. Bush advisor Karen Hughes, former Vice President Dan Quayle, former President Obama social secretary Desiree Rogers and White House Chief Usher from 1986-2007, Gary J. Walters. The White House insiders share valuable insight about the flips which oftentimes happen under very tense circumstances, including President Carter's transition which was scheduled in the midst of the Iranian hostage negotiations.

They also share little known moments, such as President Clinton's late arrival to his own scheduled exit - sending White House Chief Usher Gary J. Walters into a panic.
A typical move is not an option, particularly in The White House. Every trace of the previous presidency must be erased as the new family moves in. The team must move quickly to remove all remnants of the previous administration from the West Wing offices plus 3,100 square feet of living quarters. One item out of place during a flip could mean a significant delay on urgent presidential actions.
It's a race against time before the new President of the United States and family cross the threshold to begin a new page in history.

'Munsters' reboot airs on NBC during Halloween week

NBC's failed "Munsters" reboot "Mockingbird Lane" will get a reboot as Halloween nears when NBC turns Friday, October 26 into Fright Night. The network will show the pilot of the “Mockingbird Lane” (8-9 p.m. ET) -- based on executive producer Bryan Fuller’s (“Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) script and directed by executive producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men” film series, “House”). The special program leads into a haunting “La Llorona” Halloween episode of “Grimm” (9-10 p.m. ET), which will also have special airings on NBCUniversal’s Telemundo and mun2.
“Mockingbird Lane” is a new reimagined version of the classic 1960s comedy “The Munsters,” now as a visually spectacular one-hour drama with a darker edge and tone. The cast includes Jerry O’Connell (“The Defenders”) as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi (“Arrested Development”) as his wife Lily, Eddie Izzard (“United States of Tara,” “The Riches”) as Grandpa, Mason Cook (‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D”) as Eddie and Charity Wakefield (“The Raven”) as Marilyn.

“This exciting new take on a memorable series will definitely blow out conventional wisdom and create its own legacy,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “Teaming this new show with a terrifying episode of ‘Grimm’ makes the perfect pre-Halloween fright-fest.”

In the original 1964-66 series “The Munsters,” the odd but lovable family lived on 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

In “Mockingbird Lane,” sweet little Eddie Munster (Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. Truth is, he’s about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places -- as in all over his body -- every time the moon is full! Eddie’s got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (O’Connell), who brings new meaning to “Frankenstein”; and Grandpa (Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren’t actually Dracula! Of course then there’s creepy cousin Marilyn (Wakefield), who’s really the odd one because she’s so completely normal.

Buying a house these days is a nightmare, so Herman and Lily are shocked that no one scooped up the rambling Victorian mansion at 1313 Mockingbird Lane that was the site of a series of grisly hobo murders. Settling into their new place, they’re quickly onto the mission at hand: to gently ease Eddie into the reality of his werewolf adolescence. But it’s not always so easy to accept that your child is a little “different” from the rest of the kids. Meanwhile, Herman, who works as a funeral director, is suffering from a heart condition. Since he’s made up mostly of spare parts, he knew his makeshift heart would eventually give out. No worries though, because Grandpa, who is pretty good at procuring body parts, is on the case. All Herman cares about is finding a new heart with the same capacity to love Lily as much as he has for so many decades.

“Mockingbird Lane” is from Living Dead Guy Productions, Bad Hat Harry Productions and Universal Television.  Executive producers include Fuller, Singer and Sara Colleton (“Dexter”).  Singer also directed the pilot.

Williams also starred in a Brian DePalma movie; put out his own hit records and albums; was a guest on The Tonight Show fifty times; and is the president of ASCAP..

In the 1970's, Paul Williams rose to fame as a singer, actor and songwriter. Director Steve Kessler sets out to re-introduce a new generation to Williams' soulful classics. "Paul Williams Still Alive" is the self-narrated story of Stephen Kessler's lifelong obsession with the former superstar-and what happens when the nostalgic filmmaker finally catches up with him.

'Da Vinci's Demons': sneak peek photos

Some first look photos from STARZ new drama series "Da Vinci's Demons" have been released. Starring Tom Riley, Laura Haddock and Lara Pulver, “Da Vinci's Demons” is a historical fantasy, following the ‘untold’ story of the world's greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.

Brilliant and passionate, the twenty-five year old Leonardo Da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.
The first season of the series will premiere in 2013.

Check out some photos  showing Tom Riley as Da Vinci from the series below:
