'Christmas in Connecticut', 'A Christmas Carol': holiday classics come into theaters

November 17, 2014
Two holiday classic films are coming to the big screen. “TCM Presents: ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Christmas in Connecticut,’” hosted by Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Lovers of old Hollywood Films can see the 1938 version of the holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol,” and the 1945 romantic comedy, “Christmas in Connecticut,” on Sunday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time in select cinemas nationwide.

In addition, fans of classic films will have the opportunity to view a special introduction from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz before the double feature begins. Both films will be shown in the same aspect ratio (1.37) as when they were originally released in cinemas.

Tickets for “TCM Presents: ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Christmas in Connecticut’” are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. The event will be presented in more than 630 select movie theaters around the country through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is one of the holiday season's most told story with more than  40 feature films, TV movies and short films on the subject. The 1938 version starring Reginald Owen as Ebenezer Scrooge, tells the story of how Scrooge, a bitter and miserly old man, learns the true meaning of Christmas after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas that has yet to be. He wakes up Christmas morning a changed man. Also noteworthy is the only joint appearance of The Lockhart acting family (Gene, Kathleen and June, who makes her motion picture debut at age 12).

“Christmas in Connecticut” is about a writer in New York (played by Barbara Stanwyck) who publishes a series of well-regarded articles about her non-existent country Connecticut farm. When faced with hosting a Christmas party Elizabeth Lane attempts to create the life her fictional articles portray.

“These films are heart-warming family favorites and this double bill is a great holiday outing for new and old fans alike,” Fathom Events Executive Vice President Shelly Maxwell said. “Fathom Events is pleased to be able to present these holidays favorites as they have always been meant to be seen: on the big screen.”

Trailer: 'Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B' on Lifetime

Lifetime has released the first official trailer for the upcoming Aaliyah biopic, "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B."

From Lifetime:

Before Beyonce and before Rihanna, self-proclaimed “street but sweet” Aaliyah was poised to become a global icon with top-selling albums, a hot movie career and an adoring fan base.  But behind the spotlight, Brooklyn-born, Detroit-raised Aaliyah Dana Haughton struggled to succeed in a tough business while staying grounded in the midst of her growing celebrity.  The film follows the beautiful and talented performer’s inspirational journey, from her debut on Star Search at the age of ten to the challenges she faced during her rise to become the Princess of R&B.  On August 25, 2001, at the height of her popularity, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying the singer and some of her video crew crashed after takeoff from a Bahamian runway.  Although just 22-years-old at the time of her death, Aaliyah continues to lead a legacy as Billboard’s tenth most famous R&B artist of the past 25 years and one of the recording industry’s most successful artists in history.
"Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B "stars Alexandra Shipp as Aaliyah, Chattrisse Dolabaille as Missy Elliot, Izaak Smith as Timbaland, Elise Neal as Gladys Knight, and Anthony “Tony” Grant as Damon Dash. The movie premieres Saturday, November 15 at 8pm.

2015 TCM Classic Film Festival announce four world premiere restorations, including 'Spartacus'

TCM's 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival lineup has announced its first four films. The festival will feature four newly restored editions of the classic films, "Apollo 13" (1995), "Spartacus" (1960), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939) and "Steamboat Bill Jr." (1928).

Apollo 13 (1995) – 20th Anniversary – World premiere restoration presented in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment
Ron Howard's extraordinary film chronicles the mechanical mishaps aboard the Apollo 13 lunar spacecraft and the diligent efforts to bring the astronauts home safely. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton star as the astronauts, with Gary Sinise and Ed Harris as their counterparts in Mission Control and Kathleen Quinlan as Hanks' wife. The screenplay is based on the book Lost Moon by astronaut Jim Lovell, played by Hanks in the film, and Jeffrey Kluger. Apollo 13 earned Oscars for its taut film editing and exceptional sound design.

Spartacus (1960) – 55th Anniversary – World premiere restoration presented in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment
Widely regarded as one of the best "sand and sandal" epics that became a staple of Hollywood during the 1950s and '60s, Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus tells the engrossing tale of a slave who became a gladiator and went on to challenge the might of the Roman Empire. Kirk Douglas plays the title role and served as producer on the film, which also stars Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, John Gavin and Peter Ustinov, in an Oscar®-winning performance. This film helped bring about the end of the Hollywood blacklist when Douglas publicly announced that Dalton Trumbo, one of the "Hollywood Ten," would be adapting Howard Fast's bestselling historical novel. In addition to Ustinov's win, Spartacus took home Oscars for its art direction, costume design and cinematography.

HunchbackThe Hunchback of Notre Dame(1939) – World premiere restoration presented in association with Warner Bros. Classics
Charles Laughton plays Quasimodo, Victor Hugo's tragic hero in this lavish RKO production of the oft-told tale with Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda under the direction of William Dieterle. The cast also includes Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell and Edmond O'Brien. The Paris set, which included a remarkable replica of the famed Notre Dame cathedral, was one of the largest built during the era.

Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928) – World premiere restoration presented in collaboration with Cohen Film Collection
Buster Keaton stars as the son of a paddle-steamer captain in love with the daughter of his father's business rival in this dazzling silent comedy. Despite its box office failure, Steamboat Bill Jr. has since become one of the most cherished Buster Keaton vehicles. Its hurricane sequence required numerous breakaway sets and buildings, including the building façade that just missed crushing Keaton in the movie's most famous sight gag. The TCM Classic Film Festival's screening of Steamboat Bill Jr. will feature a live orchestra conducted by legendary silent film composer Carl Davis in a world premiere performance of his new score.

2015 TCM Classic Film Festival sets 'History According to Hollywood' theme

The TCM Classic Film Festival have set the dates for their annual festival. The four day weekend event is set for March 26 - March 29, 2015 in Hollywood. The theme for the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival will be "History According to Hollywood."
The Old West. Medieval England. Ancient Rome. Hollywood has found endless inspiration in re-creating historical moments and bringing to life the heroes and villains of the past, creating a form of time travel for audiences through the ages and around the world. These films, however, are not always true to the historical record. Filmmakers have often created works about the past that are a reflection of the period in which they were made, or change facts to suit a particular storyline. The 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival will explore how cinema has shaped how we view – and remember – history.
Robert Osborne  and Ben Mankiewicz will once be on hand as official host and special introductions, respectively. The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is also the festival's official hotel and central gathering point and will also offer special rates for festival attendees.

Screenings and events during the festival will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres and the Egyptian Theatre, as well as other Hollywood venues.

Passes for the 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival are set to go on sale to the public Thursday, Nov. 13, at noon (ET).
