Review: Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton shine in 'Loving'

Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton in "Loving" from Focus Features
The movie, "Loving" tells the real-life story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple whose marriage, which was illegal at the time in their native state of Virginia.

At the time, 16 other States had similar laws, known as “anti-miscegenation” laws leading up to the Supreme Court Case Loving v. Virginia.

The case marked a groundbreaking moment in Civil Rights history that declared any law prohibiting interracial marriage, unconstitutional.

The name is fitting for the movie which shows the strong love the Lovings had for one another. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton shine in their subtle yet powerful performances. Writer and director, Jeff Nichols, appears to channel the couple's laid back easy go lucky style giving it an energy that fits a country lifestyle.

The depiction of racism during the couple's first arrest is moving and poignant but doesn't punch you in the gut like civil rights movies in recent years.

Richard when leaving his bricklayer job to return home to his family finds a brick in the front seat of his car covered with the Life Magazine feature, Richard knows that it's a threat to his family.

Not wanting the spotlight and seemingly unaffected by the meaning of the case, their motives were to be able to live in their hometown. The couple chooses to skip the final hearing and when their lawyer for the case asks Richard if there was anything he wanted to say about the case. Richard's response, "Tell the judge 'I Love My Wife.'"

This one is sure to be recognized at Oscar time having already recognition at The Golden Globes and is on numerous film critics lists. The movie's stars shine bright, both receiving Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.

Loving (2016)

Starring Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga, Alonzo Miller, and Michael Sheen.

Synopsis: From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter,” “Mud,” “Midnight Special”), LOVING celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.

'Riverdale' premieres on The CW January 26 (Video)

December 17, 2016
The CW premieres the highly anticipated series, "Riverdale." Based on the characters from Archie Comics, the series debuts Thursday, January 26 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music and not follow in his dad’s footsteps despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Now Archie has no one to mentor him, certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse).

Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick), aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between Veronica and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)... Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows.

'The Wall': Chris Hardwick talks hosting new game show and working with exec producer LeBron James

Host Chris Hardwick with a contestant on NBC's "The Wall"
From NBC and executive producer LeBron James, comes a brand new game show called "The Wall." The show which gives contestants an opportunity to win as much as $3 million on a single drop.

The "wall" is four stories high and tests the knowledge of the contestants in a variety of subjects and also tests their levels of trust with one another as they try to win millions of dollars are a team.

Chris Hardwick, hosts as the contestants must get a question correct and a green ball will fall down the wall and add the value of the slot to the players’ winning total. Miss a question and an ominous red ball with fall and deduct the value from the teams’ total. Contestants have to work together to build a huge cash prize.
"I love that it’s positive and not built on negativity and cynicism and it’s really fun to watch people hurt each other, be mean to each other," said Harwick about the show's positivity. "These people really care about each other and I think we could use a little bit of positivity in our culture. That was part of the mission statement that it wasn’t just a frivolous superfluous kind of a thing. It was a very deeply emotional thing and it changes peoples’ lives and we are trying to give away as much of NBCs money as possible and so I legitimately, I have every reason in the world to root for these people."

One show consists of a pair of contestants working as a team, which Harwick feels make the show the special and relatable.

"It’s so genius to have every episode just be one team because you really do care about them by the end of it and however much empathy you felt watching them, for me it was tenfold because I spend so much time with them and I’m talking to them off camera and really finding out about their lives and who they are and what they do and about their kids. I really do care if they win money or if they leave without money."

Hardwick, who is one of the busiest hosts with hosting gigs on the talk shows "At Midnight" and "The Talking Dead," to name a few, his happy that his career currently allows him to be more selective with his projects.

"I’ve been working for 22 years," said Hardwick. "I’ve not worked more in my career than have worked and I’m in a nice window right now where I don’t have to do anything that I don’t want to. I don’t have to take jobs for money and I feel like that’s about as much success as you can ever ask for."

One of the benefits of working with LeBron James, Hardwick admires his dedication to his sport.

"He’s great," Hardwick says. "You know when he’s in season, he’s focused on basketball so I don’t bother him. Let him focus on that."

"The Wall" airs Tuesdays beginning January 3 with sneak previews on December 19  at 10:00 p.m. and January 2 at 10:00 p.m.
