OWN picks up Tyler Perry's 'The Paynes,' announces dates for other Perry shows

January 30, 2017
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced today a 38-episode order for a new comedy series from Tyler Perry, "The Paynes," a spinoff of his popular series "House of Payne." The network has also ordered 44 additional episodes of Perry's hit OWN drama series "The Haves and the Have Nots" and 18 episodes of "If Loving You is Wrong."

Written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, "The Paynes" meets back up with Curtis and Ella Payne (stars LaVan Davis and Cassi Davis reprising their roles) who are trying to enjoy their retirement in Florida only to get roped into a real estate deal that will tumble their lives like clothes in a dryer. The comedy has begun production at the new Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and will premiere on OWN in 2018.

Additionally, the network announced the final seasons of Perry's popular comedy series "Love Thy Neighbor" and "For Better or Worse," which will both move to Saturday nights. "Love Thy Neighbor" will premiere its fourth season on Saturday, March 4 with back-to-back episodes at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. "For Better or Worse" will premiere its sixth season on Saturday, June 10 with back-to-back episodes at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. Both series will air through 2017 with 22 and 20 episodes respectively.

"Tyler has been an incredible collaborator, a great partner and has an unprecedented track record of success with his hit scripted series," said Erik Logan, president, OWN. "Tyler's shows are must see TV for his loyal audience and we are excited to offer up a brand-new comedy and more episodes of their favorite Tyler dramas on OWN. We also would like to thank the entire casts of both 'Love Thy Neighbor' and 'For Better or Worse' who have given us loads of laughs over the years. Both series have had great runs and we appreciate everyone's hard work and dedication."

The January 3 season premiere of "The Haves and the Have Nots" (Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT) delivered 3.6 million viewers (L+3) and ranked as the night's #1 cable telecast for women. The series consistently ranks as Tuesday night's #1 original cable series among women as well as primetime's #1 original series for African-American women and total viewers. In its most recent season (9/13/16 - 11/29/16), "If Loving You is Wrong" averaged 2.65 million total viewers (L+3) and was Tuesday night's #1 original cable series for W25-54.
Series descriptions and airdates below:

"THE PAYNES" (Premieres in 2018) - In this spin-off of Tyler Perry's hit comedy "House of Payne," Curtis and Ella Payne (stars LaVan Davis and Cassi Davis reprising their roles) are trying to enjoy their retirement in Florida only to get roped into a real estate deal that will tumble their lives like clothes in a dryer. The series also stars Jackée Harry, Stephanie Charles, Markice Moore, JD McCrary and Sanai Victoria.

"THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS" (Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT) - The one-hour drama follows the tangled lives of the wealthy Cryer and Harrington families and the poor Young family. In its fourth season, which premiered January 3 as the night's #1 cable telecast for women, "The Haves and the Have Nots" continues to heat up as Hanna (Crystal R. Fox), the moral conscience, is tested like never before. Hanna and her son, Benny, (Tyler Lepley) are stripped of everything they have once Candace's (Tika Sumpter) latest hustle fails miserably.

"IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG" (New Season Premieres Tuesday, March 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) - With a diverse cast and storylines ranging from heartfelt to scandalous, the sexy, sleek one-hour drama from Tyler Perry takes viewers into the lives of a group of husbands, wives and friends that live and love in the same middle class neighborhood. On the surface, they are true-to-life, relatable people - raising children, working jobs, finding and maintaining romance - but just below the veneer of happiness, their lives are entangled by heartbreak, deceit and lies that threaten to destroy everything. Throughout the season, "If Loving You Is Wrong" continues to follow Alex (Amanda Clayton), Kelly (Edwina Findley Dickerson), Marcie (Heather Hemmens), Esperanza (Zulay Henao) and Natalie (April Parker Jones) on their quest to find love in the midst of managing very complex lives. For these women, love is an ever-present necessity in spite of the high price that sometimes must be paid.

"LOVE THY NEIGHBOR" (Final Season Premieres Saturday, March 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) - The half-hour comedy is set at The Love Train Diner, a family run restaurant where every day the menu serves up good food, great laughs, valuable life lessons and a whole lot of love. The series stars Palmer Williams Jr., Patrice Lovely, Kendra C. Johnson, Andre Hall, Jonathan Chase, Darmirra Brunson, Tony Grant and Leigh-Ann Rose.

"FOR BETTER OR WORSE" (Final Season Premieres Saturday, June 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) - The popular comedy series follows the ups and downs of dating and marriage and centers on Angela Williams (Tasha Smith), the owner of a successful beauty salon, and her husband of 13 years, Marcus (Michael Jai White). The series also stars Crystle Stewart, Jason Olive, Kent Faulcon, Kiki Haynes Cocoa Brown and Brad James.

"The Paynes," "The Haves and the Have Nots," "If Loving You is Wrong," "Love Thy Neighbor" and "For Better or Worse" are created, written, directed and executive produced by Tyler Perry and produced for OWN by Tyler Perry Studios.

It'sValentine's Day all February as ABC celebrates the day with romance on a number of their shows. Love is all around when classic Charlie Brown specials, ABC's comedies, "General Hospital" and "Fresh Off the Boat" are just two of the shows with special moments for this time of the year, Valentine's Day.

Below are highlights of specials and episodes scheduled for February. All times are EST:

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3

" Dr. Ken" - "A Dr. Ken Valentine's Day" - Ken lets Allison, who is second-guessing her decision to have a low-key Valentine's Day, think that a love poem Dave wrote for his sweetheart, Emily (guest star Zooey Jeong, Ken Joeng's real-life daughter), is meant for her. Meanwhile, Molly and Jae consider Valentine's Day a corporate concoction; Clark plans a romantic scavenger hunt to lead Connor to his present; and complications arise when Damona and Eric have dinner at a restaurant that she and Pat once frequented when they were dating. (8:31-9:00 p.m.)

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

"The Goldbergs" - "Agassi" - Adam feels like he's losing his best friend, Chad, so he attempts to join the tennis team. When Chad picks Dave Kim as his partner, Adam vows to take him down with Barry in a tennis match, channeling Andre Agassi. Meanwhile, with the help of Beverly, Erica deals with her post-break up depression just in time for Valentine's Day. (8:00-8:30 p.m.)

"Speechless" - "V-A-L - VALENTINE'S D-A--DAY" - Maya attempts to give Jimmy a Valentine's Day gift, with the help of his old roommate and her ex-fiancé (guest star Ken Marino as Ethan). Ray is elated to find out he has a secret admirer, but will he learn the truth of who it is? Meanwhile, JJ is in charge of distributing candy-grams, which proves challenging for both he and Kenneth. (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

"Modern Family" - "Do You Believe in Magic?" - Fearful that the romance between him and Claire is fizzling, Phil calls upon his alter ego, Clive Bixby, to get Valentine's Day back on track. Jay shows a bit of child favoritism when he and Gloria must deal with Joe's inappropriate Valentine gift-giving and Manny's dating indecisiveness. When Cam and Mitch empower Lily, Haley and Sal (Elizabeth Banks) to stand up for themselves to the men in their lives, things don't turn out quite as planned and in fact go a little overboard. Alex discovers she has a secret admirer who may be a little too involved with the family. Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks guest star. (9:00-9:31 p.m.)

"black-ish" - "The Name Game" - Dre and Bow have a gender reveal party, and Dre is thrilled because it's his turn to name the baby. He decides on a culturally significant name that Bow and Ruby aren't a fan of. Meanwhile, Zoey's plan to have an anti-Valentine's Day with her friend Shelly is thwarted when Junior asks Shelly out on a date, so Diane tries to fill in as Zoey's BFF. (9:31-10:00 p.m.)

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10

"Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown," the 1975 special produced and animated by the same team that gave us the now classic holiday specials and taken directly from the late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz's famed comic strip, will air with the classic "A Charlie Brown Valentine." In "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown," hearts are fluttering on Valentine's Day at Birchwood School, and Linus has brought a huge box of candy for his homeroom teacher. Thinking that the candy is for her, Sally reciprocates with a homemade card for Linus. Meanwhile, Lucy demands some affection from Schroeder, and Charlie Brown waits for his cards in the mail... and waits... and waits. In "A Charlie Brown Valentine," Charlie Brown finally works up the courage to call the little red-haired girl to ask her to the Valentine's Day dance. But once again he ends up broken-hearted and empty-handed when he dials the wrong number and reaches Peppermint Patty instead. (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 13

"General Hospital" - On "General Hospital," love is in the air in Port Charles as Kiki and Dillon make another attempt at a romantic first date. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14

"The Chew" - "The Chew" has a Valentine to its viewers with sumptuous recipes for your sweetheart that won't break the bank and will have your taste buds swooning. (1:00-2:00 p.m. EST/check local listings)

But when Ann's son goes missing, Jessica proves that her independent security measures work better than everyone else's. Meanwhile, Eddie sets the stage for the perfect first kiss with Alison, on a special Valentine's Day-themed episode. Courtney Thorne-Smith ("Melrose Place") guest stars as Ann. (9:00-9:30 p.m.).

Interview: chatting with 'General Hospital' actor Matt Cohen

Credit: ABC
"General Hospital's" newest staff member is Dr. Griffin Munro, played by Matt Cohen. If Cohen looks familiar to you, its because you definitely have him before. The versatile actor has a host of screen credits under his belt, including "How to Get Away with Murder," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "South of Nowhere" "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders."

As Griffin Munro, a former priest turned neurosurgeon, Cohen has had the opportunity to work with some of the show's heavyweights like Emmy winners Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) and Maurice Bernard (Sonny Corinthos).

TVMusic Network recently caught up with Cohen to get his thoughts on joining the Emmy-Award winning show.

Check out the interview below:

Phyllis: Happy New Year! Did you make any New Year's resolutions?

Matt Cohen: Yeah, I did. I make the same New Year's resolution for the past three years. And that’s to not lie to myself about things, about anything.
Don’t tell yourself you are working out hard when you are not.
Don’t tell yourself that one thing you are eating doesn’t matter because it does. Don’t tell yourself I’ll call your parents tomorrow. Stop lying to yourself and just call them. That’s always my thing.

Phyllis: I know, and you have had a very busy year last year. Busier than the one before. What were some of the year's highlights for you?

Matt Cohen: Everything is a highlight. Every day I wake up, breathe air, and get to go work on a set with whoever I am working with, it's all such a blessing. I have been so lucky. I have been working in the business for 12 years now paying my bills since the first year I was here. I still get excited to drive on to "General Hospital's" lot every day or on the CBS lot for "Criminal Minds." I’m so excited, I'm a fanboy, I think, "wait a minute, and I got to get it together because I have to say lines to these people that I love and admire and every day." It’s just the best day of my life. I have a wife I love, a baby that is almost two and he is a really big pain in the butt. (Laughter)

Phyllis: Congrats on "General Hospital." So you have been there for a while but you're still sort of new to the fans. Phyllis: What do you think was their first perception of you when you when you first came on?

Matt Cohen: Uhmm, probably they wanted to be rid of me and have the old doctor back.

Phyllis: No, no, no, no!

Matt Cohen: I am [still] trying to win them over.

Phyllis: There is always room for more doctors. We need all of you to stay.

Matt Cohen: I know, we need some more doctors.

Phyllis: Yeah we do.

Matt Cohen: Yeah, I don't know. I hope that they felt that I was coming in from a caring place for them into the show and all that try to bring to the table. I want to support what has already been made before me and I want to bring a little extra to it and try to help to take it to the next level.

Phyllis: Right. Do you think that there is a natural curiosity about your character? He's Duke's son but Duke isn't on screen. You share that history with his iconic character. How did you feel about that when they told you that you would be playing Duke's son?

Matt  Cohen: You know that was so awesome. I screen tested with Finola (Hughes, Anna.) We have this chemistry and she doesn't like mess around. She shows up and she is acting her ass off on that screen test and you are like, "uh oh!" We either had to have a connection or we don't and we did. Obviously, a lot of my beginning scenes are with her, and she introduced me to Ian (Buchanan, ex-Duke). You know, I feel so lucky. I have been tossed into a soap opera later on in my career but I have been tossed into soap royalty a little bit.

I feel...I honor that. I don't take it for granted. With Maurice (Bernard, Sonny), we share some of the best acting work I have ever done. Him and I, when we are on screen together. He recognizes and I recognize, we both go wow. He has said to me before or I have said it, we should have played father and son.

Phyllis: Exactly, or brothers? Something...

Matt Cohen: You never know what's going to happen. But him and I, he brings out the best side of me just like Finola does; and I feel so lucky to be surrounded by those set of persons. It is amazing.

Phyllis: What I love about "General Hospital" and I have said this before, is that you can take two actors who have never shared story before, and when they get together and that chemistry is there, that situation is there. How, as a new person, how did you help build that chemistry with the established cast?

Matt Cohen: You know, I tried to just be as honest as I could. And I tried to take their hints when they were giving them and when they were willing to give them. You want to adapt to the actor in front of you. That is the type of guy that I am. Unless you are playing a very strong character, like Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean" or something.  I try to adapt to what Maurice is dishing out, and what Finola is dishing out and the rest of the great actors in there. If you step on somebody's toes let them try to nudge you back into the right direction.  Everybody wants the best for each other. It is a good working environment.

Phyllis: Can you share how involved your character will be with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and with Franco (Roger Horwath)?

Matt Cohen: Hopefully very involved. She is the best.

Phyllis: I like that friendship between Elizabeth and Griffin and I like how it is growing.

Matt Cohen: Away from the show, she is this amazing mother and wife and such a kind heart to me as Matt; and then on the show, she is such a sweetheart. And Roger, I have an infatuation with Roger. I am addicted to him. I don't get enough of him. I try to talk to him and I can't. We are both so busy but I want to interact with him more on a regular basis. He is one of my favorite people. I love seeing his face. I love seeing Franco play this weird, dark character.

Phyllis: It is almost like an acting class when you watch him and the choices that he makes.

Matt Cohen: I tell (executive-producer) Frank (Valentini) every time, Can I come up early because Roger has scenes before me, that I want to watch him because I never know how he is going to deliver it. He delivers things not how it is written, (yeah) ever! And it is so beautiful to watch. It’s beautiful.

Phyllis: Is there any character or actor that you want to work with, that you haven't had the chance to yet? Or work with more?

Matt Cohen: Yes.  I would like to get Billy (Miller, Jason) in my life more because we are old friends and I know we have chemistry. We have been friends now for about, six, seven years all along. I would like to work with him and Kelly (Monaco, Sam.)  Everybody really. I recently got to do a couple scenes with Michelle (Stafford, Nina.) She is great. Laura (Wright, Carly) and I did a few things here and there. She always shows up so hard, I am like, I feel like a little puppy.

Phyllis: Yeah. You have a lot of really good people. Can we talk about "Criminal Minds?" Can you preview your character and give us a little tease?

Matt Cohen: All right. I'm on "Criminal Minds Beyond Borders." We don't have an air date for the second season yet, but it is probably in March. I play Gary Sinise's son. So Gary Sinise plays Jack Garrett an FBI guy and I play his son, Ryan Garrett. I am also undercover FBI. I get into many sticky situations and try to step out of my father's shadow. I mean (That is so cool) luckily he is there to rescue me. So let's put it that like that and then in the finale of Season Two, I can pretty much say with 100% certainty that what I do to Gary no one has ever done before. And what I do to Jack, yeah it is a good, it is great, it’s really fun. He is such a tremendous guy. He has his Gary Sinise Foundation that does all this special work. He is such a good human and that is what you want in this business, to be around people that you like - people that are doing good stuff for other people.

Phyllis: I turn back to you? I have some random questions like: "What is your favorite musical artist, band or song?

Matt Cohen: I am a huge Louden Swain fan. They are a relatively new band.
They have a new album out Friday but you should look them up, Louden Swain. They are very rock and roll, alternative, you know, little pop rock, a little kind of gypsy rock, kind of funk rock, right. They are great, a really great band. You have to check them out.

Phyllis: I will. What was your first concert? Do you remember the first concert that you went to?

Matt Cohen: My first concert was, Rage Against The Machine.  I snuck into it. I was thirteen years old at the time. It was also the same day that I got my first black eye because I went into the mosh pit. Some guy punched me in the face. It wasn't like he wanted to fight me, it was just a mosh pit. I shouldn't have been in there because I was a baby. I got what was coming to me.

Phyllis: Did you get grounded when you got home?

Matt Cohen: No. My Dad knew I had gotten what I deserved. He knew I wouldn't want to hold my head up at school the next day. My second concert I saw was Wu-Tang Clan. That was a life-changing experience if you are East Coast person in your heart. I was born and raised in Florida. I spent some time in New York but Wu-Tang Clan, they have changed hip hop forever. Hip hop will never be what it was when they were on top of the charts. No offense towards Drake, (aka Aubrey Graham), who is great. We used to work on a show together. When I was on "South of Nowhere," he was on "Degrassi." He is one of the nicest people, best people. God bless him, but Wu-Tang is in my heart forever.

Phyllis: He will be alright with that I am sure.

Matt Cohen: He is good, he doesn't need me.

Phyllis: Is there anything on your personal bucket list that you haven't done yet but you would like to?

Matt Cohen: Anything I haven't done, I want to do. I want to live as much life as I am allowed to live before I have to stop living this life, you know. Going to Africa, running with lions, scuba diving with sharks, I don't know. Sitting down and listening to, going to an elderly person's home and listening to all their life stories. I wanna see it all. I wish I could live for two hundred (200) years.

Phyllis: Lastly, if you were in some legal trouble, say you had a dead body in the trunk of your car. Who would you call to get out of that sticky situation?

Matt Cohen: I would call my wife. Nobody else besides my wife. I could call my Dad but he would be like "Jesus, I have to deal with this."

Phyllis: Yes, call your wife.

Matt Cohen: I would skip that phone call. My wife would be like "don’t tell me anything. I don't want to know what happened. I was never here! She would clean up the whole thing. She would be like Viola Davis in "How to Get Away with Murder." So it is my Matt Cohen situation.

Catch Matt as Dr. Griffin Munro on "General Hospital" weekdays on ABC.

Interview: Charles Cohen of 'Cohen Film Classics' coming to KCET

Beginning on Friday, January 27, KCET in Southern California and Link TV  nationwide will debut a new classic film series, "Cohen Film Classics," that will offer viewers a chance to see some of the most iconic films that defined the twentieth-century cinema
landscape.
The series will feature some of the biggest names in films, including Alfred Hitchcock, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Luc Besson and more. The series is hosted by Charles S. Cohen, president & CEO of Cohen Media Group,
producer and distributor of critically acclaimed arthouse, foreign and classic films.

Cohen selected ten classic films from his private collection of over 700 titles ranging from featured in the Cohen Film Collection to create a curated mix of documentaries, musicals, comedies, animation, dramas and avant-garde works.

Up first is the documentary, "What is Cinema?” which looks at more than 100
clips, archival interviews and new insights from film icons Mike Leigh, Robert Altman and Akira Kurosawa.  The film premieres January 27 at 10:00 p.m. PT on KCET and airs nationwide at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Link TV.

TVMusic Network caught up with Cohen to find out how he brought the series to life and what his earliest memories of watching films were.

Phyllis: How did you decide to host a program like this?

Charles Cohen: It's always been a dream of mine. I've always been a fan of Robert Osborne. I was interviewed by him once at one of the TCM Festivals in LA... I was always fascinated with how he makes it look so effortless and how knowledgeable he is about so many films and how he helps the audience really appreciate filmmaking from the inside. It was something that always appealed to me so when this opportunity arose I jumped at it.

Phyllis: What in your opinion makes a film a classic?

Charles Cohen: A classic film - it takes its classic definition from several components. One is that it transcends time with which it's made so it has a timeless quality - the second is that its subject matter or story again is not rooted in a particular  time frame, it has universal themes and appeal and lastly, it's a film that has been largely regarded by both the audience and by the critical community as having superior craftsmanship, performances, direction, editing, music and so on

Phyllis: Is there a film you'd consider a classic but isn't on a lot of critics lists or is often overlooked?

Charles Cohen: There's a lot of them. You can probably shake a stick at it and have a list as long as that. That's the problem. There are so many films that, either for one reason or another, failed to excite an audience or the timings bad, or the weather's bad when the film opens or it just doesn't resonate as the filmmakers thought, but on a later viewing they get a second life. That's what's great about film preservation...and curating films and KCET seems to really do this is an organized way that's efficient and in a substantial way.

Phyllis: When you were younger that there a movie that really stuck with you that or resonated with yu was probably one of the reasons that you're so passionate about films today?

Charles Cohen: When I was three years old, my grandmother took me to see, on Eastside Manhattan, Walt Disney's "Cinderella." That was in the mid-1950's and we sat through it twice. I like to tell my parents that it had such an impact on me, I probably was never the same afterward.

Phyllis: Is there a particular genre of film that is your favorite?

Charles Cohen: No, I like all types of films.

Phyllis: Regarding films of today, is there one genre or one film that we will be calling a classic 50 years from now?

Charles Cohen: I think it's exciting what going on in documentary filmmaking. In our particular segment, I think we have more documentaries than I can remember and given the technology and the advances, all you need is a digital camera, ou don't need elaborate focusing and lighting and preparation that there's an immediacy that can be captured by digital video that could pretty much, anyone with a camera can be a documentarian.
