What's On TV Tonight - 'Songland' - NBC's 'The Voice' For Songwriters

Tonight on NBC the network premieres a new music competition series, "Songland," from the producers of "The Voice," premiering Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT after the premiere of "America's Got Talent."

The show is the brainchild of Dave Stewart of Eurythmics and "The Voice" showrunner Audrey Morrissey who serves as executive producer alongside Stewart, director Ivan Dudynsky, and former "The Voice" coach and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

In “Songland,” unknown songwriters pitch their ideas to A-level music artists and with the help of mega-hit making producers panelists Ryan Tedder (lead singer of OneRepublic and songwriter for such artists as Beyoncé, Adele and Taylor Swift), Ester Dean (songwriter for Rihanna and Nicki Minaj) and Shane McAnally (songwriter for Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, and Sam Hunt) take their reworked song to present to an artist.

The winner of each episode has the opportunity to have his or her song recorded and released by guest artists including the Jonas Brothers, will.i.am, Charlie Puth, Meghan Trainor and John Legend who is the featured artist in the premiere episode.

According to Tedder, the beauty of this show, which takes the format of  "Shark Tank" and mixes it with "The Voice," ts the immediate rewards the next hitmakers have seen since signing on for the show.

"At its core, [the show is] credible," the songwriter/producer said the premiere event Q & A held in Hollywood earlier this month. "I'm not in a place in my life where I want to do a show where people don't really win...where there isn't some measured 'okay my life changed because of this show. One of the first writers that came on the show (and there are a lot of stories like this) got a publishing deal within two weeks on being on the show. She was inked in a deal and within two weeks of that wrote a hit record that ended up becoming an alternative crossover hit in the last 12 months. She's already written a hit and that's from the pilot episode that we did a year ago."

"On that same episode," Tedder continued, "another artist locked in an opening gig for a major international artist, during her entire European and US tour.  That's 2 out of five. The third writer got a publishing deal shortly after filming the pilot episode. That's just the first episode that we did. I'm in the process of signing two writers off the show, which was not something I counted on doing. My entire career is basically like, if I think something's dope and it passes the smell test, I jump in the water and it either works or it doesn't."

"What does it smell like," Dean asks Tedder to laughs from the crowd.

"It smells like money," adds McAnally.

Catch "Songland," Tuesdays at 10 on NBC.

About 8 years ago, Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage. First thank you must go to Mark. ❤️ We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going. After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself “theres some magic here. Something is definitely happening.” It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever. Thank you NBC for signing me up. I am truly honored to have been a part of something I’ll always cherish for the rest of my life. Thank you to every single coach I ever sat in those chairs with. That is shared experience that is singularly ours. We have that for life. Thank you to everyone who supported this long strange and amazing left turn into a place I never thought I’d go. Thank you Carson Daly for babysitting the musicians and making sure our shoes were tied and we had our lunch boxes. You are the backbone of this thing and we appreciate you more than you know. Audrey, thank you for being perhaps the most patient person in all the free world. 4 musicians all at once is a lot. Sainthood is imminent. Thank you to Paul Mirkovich and the band for their ridiculously hard work and learning more songs than maybe any band ever. 😂 Thank you to the people behind the scenes who do the real work and make this machine hum. To the amazingly talented vocalists who competed on the show and blew my mind on a daily basis. And, BLAKE FUCKIN’ SHELTON. I couldn’t hide my love for you if I tried. Seriously. I tried. Can’t do it. Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, Im just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life. Kelly and John, take care of the cowboy and I’m sure I’ll be back to say hi very very soon. So much love to you both. And lastly, to all of the loyal voice fans, there’s literally no show without you guys. For me, it was time to move on. Your support has meant EVERYTHING. And Lastly, I’d like to thank my manager Jordan for convincing me to take that meeting. 😊 What an amazing ride. Thank you all so much. ❤️ Adam

The concert will share the remarkable story of 98-year-old Ray Lambert (Elliott), a highly-decorated combat medic who landed on Omaha Beach in the largest amphibious invasion in history and a pivotal step in the Allied march to victory in World War II. Lambert’s story honors every man who landed on the beaches of Normandy that day. • Vietnam Valor and Brotherhood – brought to life by long-time friends acclaimed actor Dennis Haysbert and Joe Mantegna. Fifty years since the height of the Vietnam War, the painful memories from their service remain fresh for many of its veterans. In 1969, our soldiers continued to fulfill their duty and carry out the missions their country asked of them. As part of a special 50th anniversary commemoration to honor the service and sacrifice of Vietnam War veterans and to thank them, the concert will share the story of two infantrymen - Ernest “Pete” Peterson (Haysbert) and Brad Kennedy (Mantegna) - who formed a brotherhood while serving in Vietnam and now meet each year at the Vietnam Wall where they remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A Gold Star Widow’s Journey – portrayed by television series star Jaina Lee Ortiz. For Gold Star families, every day is Memorial Day. This year, the concert will share the journey of one widow - Ursula Palmer (Ortiz) - beginning with the day her worst fears came true, just two weeks before her husband was due to return home. While “moving on” from this devastating loss was not possible, Palmer knew that for the sake of her daughter she would have to learn to move forward. Along the way she found solace and empowerment by co-founding a new chapter of Gold Star Wives, a virtual chapter for post 9/11 widows and widowers, and by helping wounded veterans and their families.

The all-star line-up also includes: distinguished American leader General Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); Grammy Award-winning legend Patti LaBelle; multi-platinum selling singer, performer and songwriter Gavin DeGraw; Broadway and television star Christopher Jackson (HAMILTON, BULL); multi-Grammy Award-winning bluegrass icon Alison Krauss; SAG and Olivier Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated actress and singer Amber Riley (GLEE, DREAMGIRLS); multi-platinum-selling country music star Justin Moore; and Patrick Lundy & The Ministers of Music; in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly  and Alyssa Ragu from "American Idol". Also participating in the event are the U.S Joint Chiefs of Staff with The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, The U.S. Army Chorus and Army Voices, The Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band, The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters, The U.S. Air ForceSingingSergeants, the Armed Forces Color Guard and Service Color Teams provided by the Military District of Washington, D.C. The concert will also be streaming live on Facebook, YouTube and www.pbs.org/nationalmemorial-day-concert and available as Video on Demand, May 26 to June 9, 2019.

Shaun Cassidy Returns to the Concert Stage

In the late 1970s, Shaun Cassidy was King of the Airwaves with a hit TV show (“The Hardy Boys Mysteries”) and a couple of Top 10 albums. During the 1980s, Shaun starred in the TV series “Breaking Away”, appeared in “General Hospital” and guest-starred in a few episodic TV shows such as “Matlock” and “Murder She Wrote” while starting to raise his family. During the 1990s, Shaun worked mostly on the theatre stage, including a run on Broadway with his half brother, David Cassidy, in “Blood Brothers.”

While working in theatre, Shaun also started learning the art of script writing and would soon be heading back into the world of television by contributing to shows such as “Cold Case” and “Blue Bloods” and creating and producing critically-acclaimed shows such as “American Gothic”, “Invasion”, “Roar”, “Ruby and the Rockits” (which featured David and younger brother Patrick in the cast), and the current NBC hit show “New Amsterdam”.

Last weekend, in the small picturesque town of Buellton, located in Wine Country of California’s Central Coast, Shaun returned to the concert stage for the first time since 1980. Shaun brought back to life some of his biggest hits including the searing opening song “That’s Rock n Roll” as well as a rendition of Ricky Nelson’s “Teenage Idol”, and a moving tribute to his brother, David, which included Shaun singing a number from “Blood Brothers” with his keyboardist/background vocalist, Kathleen Sieck.

Interspersed between the infectious and nostalgic songs, Shaun shared stories and memories about being a teen idol, living in the elation and oddity of the celebrity “fishbowl”, writing songs at his best friend’s house, his first job, talking about girls and life with his big brother who slept on the top bunk, growing up in a Hollywood family, and being a father.

Shaun’s band was an ensemble of incredibly talented musicians who were as enthusiastic as their leader at center stage to bring the music to life. In addition to keyboardist, Sieck, the band are George Pendergast on drums, John Ormond on bass, Jason Gonzalez and Sven Holcomb on guitars, and Matt Morrish on saxophone.

The shows were performed on a beautiful, intimate stage back-dropped by velvet curtains and mood lighting at the cozy Standing Sun Winery and Art Gallery located at 92 2nd Street in Buellton, California. For a list of upcoming performances at the winery, visit: www.standingsunwines.com.

Shaun and his band will be doing a tour of the East Coast this coming Summer. Hopefully this is just the beginning for even more live shows in the future as Shaun and his band left fans wanting for even more after a weekend of fun and entertaining performances!  For dates and ticket information, follow Shaun Cassidy on his social media outlets via Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Interview: 'The Voice' Season 16 Winner Maelyn Jarmon on her Original Song 'Wait For You'

"The Voice" has crowned Team John Legend's last standing contestant Maelyn Jarmon, winner for Season 16.

The 26-year-old artist Texan beat out Team Blake Shelton's power trio Gyth Rigdon, Dexter Roberts and Andrew Severner with her powerful voice and John's guidance that led to the EGOT winner's first "The Voice" victory.
On Monday's finale performance show, Jarmon debuted her original single, “Wait for You,” which was written by Hayley Warner, Gino Barletta, and writer/producers Christopher Petrosino and Robert McCurdy of Noise Club. Jarmon had many songs with choose from, several written by Hayley who she connects with.

"I connect with how she writes. And with that song, you know, I had never collaborated or written with other people," Maelyn told TVMusic Network during a press conference with Legend after her victory.  "I'm a songwriter myself, and this felt like experience for me. No one has ever been, like, "Well, sing my song." So, I was, like, you know what, this is my time to take advantage of that. So, I went for that. And I'm so glad that I did because that song, I feel I could have written it because it was very relevant to my relationships currently, and it sat really well in my voice, and I really felt it. And she is a cool chick. And she ended up showing up to my recording, which was so cool. She came in, and she was very hands-on. And I got to record it with the guys who wrote it and originally engineered it. So, it was a really awesome experience."

For John, it was a simple as letting Maelyn do what was in her heart.

"I just had to approve it, " he said. "They sent it to me. And it was, "Maelyn likes this song; do you like it," and I was, like, "Oh, yeah. She'll sound really great doing this." And she nailed it.

"It's also a little different from my -- the stuff that I had done, Maelyn added. "So, it was nice to, like, change it up a little."

John agreed. "Yeah, I think the tempo was good for her to change up, and it worked. I mean, to get an original song on the top ten on iTunes is a challenge because people, kind of, flock to things that are more familiar a lot of times. And for the original songs to do so well, I thought, was a testament to their delivery of the song, and also to Gyth, as a writer, to get his song in the top ten, that's a pretty awesome thing. There are a lot of people that have been writing for a long time that haven't had that happen to them. And so, it's pretty incredible."

Check out Maelyn performing her single "Wait For You"  and also check out a compilation of all of her performances this season below.

"The Voice" returns for Season 17 with coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton in September on NBC.

Spoiler alert: This story contains a major spoiler from last night's Season 16 finale of CBS' "NCIS."

Ziva's alive! "NCIS" sent shockwaves to its loyal viewers during the Season 16 finale Tuesday, with the surprise return of no other than former NCIS agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo).

Ziva is thought to be dead but she arrived at the end of the episode to tell Gibbs (Mark Harmon) that he was in danger. The encounter left him speechless and when pressed by Ziva to say something. All he could manage was her name. Cue the end credits.

Fans will be left wondering all summer what was going on, but the show's producers promised more of Ziva in a big way.

“This surprise moment is just the beginning,” executive producers Frank Cardea and Steven D. Binder said in a statement.  “We are thrilled to share that Cote de Pablo will guest star in the NCIS Season 17 premiere this fall as Ziva’s warning to Gibbs unfolds.”

In the episode entitled “Daughters,” Former FBI Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) pleaded with Gibbs to do whatever is necessary to take down drug dealers and suppliers in the area after his daughter, Emily Fornell (Juliette Angelo), was hospitalized from an opiate overdose. Gibbs was also haunted by the personal aspects of the case and his history with vigilante justice -- enter Ziva to turn Gibbs' life upside down.

"NCIS" returns for Season 17 this fall on CBS.
